People with diabetes now have a reason to cheer as ‘Living with Diabetes in India’ (LWDI), the largest chronic disease community on Facebook, has tied up with leading online healthcareretailer Healthkart to provide easy access to quality,hard-to-get products for diabetics in India, including a few products not hitherto available in the Indian market. All it takes is to connect with the community page on Face book.

‘Living with Diabetes in India’ which started in February last year, specifically to address issues faced by people living with diabetes, crossed the 2,00,000 ‘likes’ mark in April and is estimated to be one of the biggest communities on Facebook dealing with a chronic disease with almost 2.5 lakh members currently. The page has attracted more ‘likes’ than the American Diabetes Association, which is one of the most popular Facebook communities globally for people with diabetes.

This huge pool of people with diabetes has prompted Healthkart, India’s largest online healthcare retail store, to plan a new range of products for people with diabetes and announce a never-before special offer across their entire range of diabetic products. Over the next few months, HealthKart plans to launch an international range of food products especially focused on diabetes, more advanced diabetes related foot care products and also insulin cooling and travel kits, etc. all of which are essential for diabetics but not readily available in India currently.

Speaking of the tie up Prashant Tandon, Co-Founder of Healthkart said, “The ‘Living with Diabetes in India’ Facebook community is a significant partnership for us due to the sheer number of members in the community and their engagement levels. Diabetes is a core category for us and we are delighted to partner with an active community like LWDI. We look forward to sourcing the best products internationally for people with diabetes in partnership with this community, if the members request for these products.”

Praful Akali, a social entrepreneur who started the LWDI page said, “There are a number of products developed internationally, especially for people with diabetes that can help them greatly enhance their quality of life. Unfortunately, some of these products are not freely available in India. Healthkart is in a position to source these products and LWDI is in a position to ensure that people with diabetes have access to these products. In such a situation, our partnership is certainly good news for people that are Living with Diabetes in India. Since becoming a community member on Facebook is free, we believe many people will connect to the‘Living with Diabetes in India’ page to avail of this facility.”
