The Heart Centre at Continental Hospitals, Gachibowli, had the rare honour of showcasing expertise in latest Interventional cardiology to cardiologists from all over the world attending the Asia-PCR Course in Singapore on Friday. Continental Hospitals, (CHL) Hyderbad was the only hospital in India to be extended this prestigious privilege, considering the expertise of the cardiologists here. The complex cardiac procedures performed by a team of cardiologists led by Dr. A. Sreenivas Kumar - Chief Cardiologist, Continental Hospitals was beamed live to the august gathering at Singapore from Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Dr. A. Sreenivas Kumar, Dr. M. Gokul Reddy, Dr. Aman Salwan and other cardiology team members at CHL were extended invitation by Organizers of Asia PCR to showcase some of the newer cardiac procedures. The team with great dexterity demonstrated the new techniques – ‘Percutaneous procedures’, which are minimally invasive and totally avoid Surgery, cutting and opening of chest and side effects associated with surgery under anesthesia like infection, lengthy recovery period etc. According to Dr Srinivas Kumar, at least 70% of patients who were subjected to Surgery in yester era are now being effectively managed with these new techniques and the superior quality stents now available. These procedures are extremely patient friendly, enabling their discharge either the same evening or the next day, while permitting them to lead a normal and active life thereafter, Dr Kumar added.
The Cardiologists at CHL demonstrated effective treatment of two cases of Multivessel PCI and Chronic total occlusion through percutaneous procedures. The Course Directors and moderators chairing the session in Singapore were highly appreciative of the skills of the Cardiologists from Continental Hospitals. One of the Course Directors immensely impressed by the skills of CHL Cardiologists, expressed his admiration by saying, “the days of teaching Indian doctors is a pass now, and it is time we Europeans upgrade ourselves by learning from the skills these dynamic and young doctors from Hyderabad, India, demonstrated."
CHL emphasizes on "The Heart Team" approach, which involves teams of Clinical, Interventional Cardiologists, cardiac Surgeons & critical specialists to together decide on the optimal therapy for each patients. This approach is ideal and is of tremendous benefit to patients, as they get most appropriate treatment. As part of this approach, the experts at CHL, with experience of over 15,000 Interventional Cardiology procedures during the past 15 years, advise patients to seek second opinion before opting for surgery for one or two vessel heart diseases. At the same time it is equally important to judiciously select the right patients for these procedures, especially in cases where blood supply to the entire heart may not be normalised by these procedures, surgery should be recommended strongly. It is also significantly important to adapt to dietary and life style modifications which are advised along with drugs like asprin & statins to benefit from the treatment and maintain a longer and happier life.
