The detective department on Saturday arrested Nang Kain Kham (27) from Myanmar, the mastermind who ran a racket of smuggling pre-activated SIM cards from Kolkata to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, through courier services. “With the help of local police, we raided a hotel in Hyderabad and arrested Kham,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma.
Cyber crooks in Cambodia used pre-activated SIMs to call people in India and defraud them. Kham’s arrest came after the Customs found 361 such SIM cards hidden in the lids of two coffee bottles. Earlier the bank fraud section at Kolkata police's detective department has busted a gang that smuggled pre-activated SIM cards of an Indian private cellular operator from Kolkata to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. These cards were used for cyber crimes, said police. Four persons from South 24 Parganas have been arrested.
“Cyber criminals in Cambodia used the SIMs. On April 3, a consignment booked with a private courier for Phnom Penh was intercepted and 361 pre-activated SIM cards were found in lids of two coffee bottles. Of them, 243 SIMs were issued from 15 POS under Kolkata Police,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma.
