Samvida Venkatesh of National Public School, Bangalore emerged as the winner of HDFC Life Spell Bee-India Spells 2012 competition in the National Final held in Mumbai on 9th June. As the National Winner, Samvida will now travel to the US to witness the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.
Talking about the four finalists, Quiz- wizard Derek O’ Brien said, “Luck is part of winning the game. But this time, luck played no part. It’s a great achievement for them to have come this far.” He also stated that this year’s competition was the best so far.”
Samvida, the National Winner was awarded a cash prize of. Rs 1,00,000. All the four finalists won a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 each. The trophies & cash prizes were awarded to the 4 winners by Mr. Sanjay Tripathy, Executive Vice President and Head, Marketing and Direct Channels, HDFC Life. During this season, HDFC Life Spell Bee reached out to over 1000 schools thereby hosting finale in 32 cities. A massive country wide hunt over the past 4 months helped bring 32 of the finest spellers from India’s schools to this platform. The 32 winners from each city came to Mumbai for the Semi final and final rounds, which were telecasted on Times Now channel in a series of 5 episodes.
