As next steps to achieving its 2020 vision outlined by the Narayana Murthy Committee, National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) today announced the launch of the Product Council 2013-15. Mr. Ravi Gururaj, Charman & Co-Founder, Frictionless Ventures was announced as the Chairman of the NASSCOM Product Council 2013-15 in the presence of Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan, Chairman, NASSCOM and Mr. Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM.
The Product Council envisions establishing the Indian software product ecosystem as a world class source of high value, innovative, next generation products which are enjoying robust sales traction and are establishing category / IP leadership in both domestic and international markets.
In March 2013, the NASSCOM Expert Committee chaired by N.R. Narayana Murthy shared key recommendations to address challenges and needs of the industry in order to help realize the industry vision 2020. The report identified the products segment as a key propeller to achieve the vision of an innovative industry that can achieve global recognition.
With a view to boost the product landscape, NASSCOM highlighted key initiatives that will be undertaken to nurture, develop, accelerate and scale the product companies in India. The NASSCOM Product Council will focus on a six pillar engagement to enhance branding, market access, benchmarking, corporate connect, product design and enablement of product solutions in India.
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan, Chairman, NASSCOM said “NASSCOM has been a transformational institution that has consistently evolved with the changing environment. Having chaired the Emerge initiative of NASSCOM earlier, I firmly believe that product companies and start-ups are the next growth engines for the industry and will contribute significantly in realizing the vision outlined for the industry. I would like to welcome Mr. Ravi Gururaj as the newly elected Chair of the NASSCOM Product Council and as member of the NASSCOM Executive Council. With his focused support and vision for the product industry, the Indian product ecosystem will expand significantly. We have also got a great team of entrepreneurs who along with Ravi are committed to do the right things to deliver a $10B Industry by 2020.”

NASSCOM also announced a partnership with Frost & Sullivan to build a Product Excellence Framework that will benchmark Indian software products across defined categories. This will enable access to market insights, competitive positioning and case studies that can be shared with customers for adoption of Indian software products.
NASSCOM Product Conclave 2013, the platform for product companies in the country will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2013 and is scheduled to be held on 29-30 October at Bangalore.
The Indian software product industry is growing exponentially in terms of both revenue and people. The growth of the software product industry has leapfrogged in recent years signaling a transformation in India. In 2013, the total Indian software market was estimated to be in the range of USD 2.2 billion. The total market opportunity in software products for Indian companies, comprising exports and the domestic market, is estimated to be USD 10 billion by 2020.

In a rich career spanning over 25 years, Ravi Gururaj has held diverse profiles including promoter of an STPI unit exporting software components out of India in the early 1990s, product management roles at Intel, Managing Director of Trilogy Software’s Bangalore GIC and founder of multiple successful software product ventures. VMLogix, an innovative cloud computing venture, was Ravi’s most recent startup which he founded from Bangalore in 2004 with funding from Bain Capital Ventures. Since its acquisition in 2010 by global technology leader Citrix, Ravi served as Vice President - Products responsible for a global cloud products group and is now transitioning into an entrepreneurial role at Frictionless Ventures. Ravi received his MBA from Harvard Business School and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Finance from the Wharton School and Computer Science & Engineering from the Moore School.
