In our continued effort towards reaching greater heights in medical excellence, Fortis Malar Hospital Chennai today opens a dedicated ‘CENTRE FOR GASTRO-INTESTINAL (GI) BLEED’ to perform path-breaking procedures in the field of Gastroenterology. The centre was inaugurated by Mr. Thiru K C Veeramani, Hon’ble Minister for Health, Government of Tamil Nadu.
“The Advanced Centre for GI Bleed’’ at Fortis Malar Hospital comes with an ideal combination of people, processes and technology. Under the expertise of acknowledged and experienced gastroenterologists, this state-of-the-art centre offers diagnosis and treatment for disorders of the digestive tract, which include the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system.” said Mr. Vijayarathna, Zonal Director, Fortis Malar Hospital.
GI Bleed manifests as either vomiting of blood (hematemesis) or passing blood in bowel motions. Bright red fresh bleeding is readily recognized by patients. However it is important to note that the blood altered due to prolonged stay in the stomach and intestine may appear like coffee grounds in vomiting or as black tar in bowel motions. Patients may experience fainting, breathlessness and weakness.
Since some of the GI Bleeds are life threatening in nature it is of utmost importance that all patients should be properly assessed immediately on arrival, risk stratified and managed accordingly.
Ø In case of HIGH RISK bleed, there will be prompt and immediate intervention by senior Interventional Gastroenterologist experienced in diagnosing and effectively treating the condition.
Ø It is important to note that the death rate for GI Bleed has been around10%, whereas research has shown that having a dedicated centre for GI Bleed can reduce this by more than 50%.
Our Centre boasts the following features based on International Research & Standards.
Time being a crucial factor: we have a
Ø 24x7 protocol based assessment and resuscitation
Ø Round the clock expert advice and intervention for GI bleeding
Ø State of the art treatment modalities for GI Bleed like
1. Banding for dilated (varicose veins) veins.
2. Injection/Heater probe/clipping for bleeding ulcers.
3. Close inputs from radiology & GI Surgery
‘Time being a crucial factor , it is important to have such a combination of international standard protocol based , patient –centered care given by a highly skilled and committed medical team; our centre aims to give best outcomes to our people. ‘says Dr. P.Basumani, Consultant Medical Gastroenterologist, Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai.
