This is the third time, Alto shows up as world’s top selling car. Earlier in 2010 and 2011, Alto had cornered this record. Interestingly, many car makers have entered in India with their small cars. But none of these cars have made any mark on the world sales chart.
While Alto remains India’s largest selling car for consecutive 9 years now, it has left behind this time top selling cars in the world market. These include Toyota Aqua in Japan, Volkswagen small car Gol in Brazil and Volkswagen Golf in Germany in calendar 2013.
Alto sold 2,65,777 units in calendar 2013. In comparison, Toyota Aqua sold 2,62,367 units, Volkswagen Gol 2,55,057 units and Volkswagen Golf sold 2,44,249 units.
Alto’s latest top rank in the world is even significant considering the current slow- down, worst in a decade, in the Indian car market when car industry in India is moving on a negative growth path.
Commenting on this achievement of Alto, Mayank Pareek, Chief Operating Officer (Marketing & Sales) of Maruti Suzuki said, “A car emerging from India as the top selling small car of the world and that too, for the third time is a matter of great pride. It also shows growing attraction of Alto among customers as the most suitable car in the market. We are confident, Alto will continue to remain rule the game.”
Launched in September 2000 in India, Alto has so far sold over 24.51 lakh units in the domestic market. The car has also been the fastest selling car of India. It sold 10 lakh units in domestic market in just 8 years and 2 months since its launch. In addition, Maruti Suzuki has exported over 2.85 lakh units of Alto to many countries.
In 2012, Alto saw a completely new model which was launched as more stylish, plush and offering a much higher fuel efficiency of 22,74kms per litre. The CNG version of Alto offers a whopping30.46 kms per kilo.
