Cable&Wireless Worldwide today announced it has landed a £12 million, five-year deal with Atkins, one of the world’s leading engineering and design consultancies, to deliver a new IP-based network that will enable a centralised IT architecture for 89 sites in the UK and India.
This new contract builds on a seven-year relationship with Cable&Wireless supporting all of Atkins’ business critical applications, such as Enterprise Resource Management (ERM), and includes the delivery of a managed Internet Protocol Virtual Private network (IP VPN) and an Application Performance Management (APM) solution.
Historically, Atkins held a vast amount of customer data, with legal responsibility to safeguard contents, in onsite file servers backed up by an overlay to a file storage company. While this solution met its needs at the time, the IT proved costly and cumbersome. Running over Cable&Wireless’ multi-service platform (MSP), the new solution will give Atkins a significant increase in available bandwidth and improved resilience allowing the company to adopt a centralised IT architecture to increase its storage capacity and ensure an improved user experience.
Tim Dadswell, IT Transition Director, Atkins, commented: “We needed to move away from disparate and costly legacy processes, to a centralised system whilst increasing network resilience and storage, ensuring the end users were not affected. Cable&Wireless has been a long-standing partner of ours and was the perfect choice to provide the services we need. We look forward to continuing this partnership into the future.”
Cable&Wireless will also supply IP Centrex, a centralised telephony service supporting increased staff mobility by allowing employees to use the same telephone number at any location through a personalised pin number. The service will use a ‘one cost per user’ revenue model, with no additional maintenance fees associated with traditional in-building telephony services.
As part of the deal, Cable&Wireless will provide a managed APM solution, which gives Atkins complete visibility of all applications flowing over its network for the first time, giving more control and the ability to prioritise business critical applications. Atkins can now start to look at its end user experience and quickly identify if any part of the network is running slow and which application or server platform is responsible.
Jim Marsh, Chief Executive Officer, Cable&Wireless Worldwide added: “We’ve enjoyed a positive and successful working relationship with Atkins for a number of years and this announcement is an endorsement of our focus on delivering the best possible service to our customers . The additional communication solutions we’re providing today will allow Atkins to concentrate on running its business, while we look after its communications suite and help deliver significant cost savings.”
