#KasmirFloods:#Google crisis map for flood hit J&K

Google has introduced a Crisis Response Map for flood hit Jammu and Kashmir with updated satellite imagery. "As the flood waters recede in Jammu and Kashmir, the rescue teams will now be able to reach thousands of stranded people. “We hope the crisis map can accelerate the efforts of responding agencies and people affected by the disaster. We continue to work on providing more relevant tools for rescue agencies, volunteers and non- profits,” says Google in a statement.

#Samsung joins hands with #Google and Aircel to promote Internet Adoption amongst Women in India

Samsung Electronics has joined hands with Aircel and Google’s Helping Women Get Online (HWGO) initiative to open up the world of the Internet to more women in India. The partnership will bring the strength of Samsung’s user-friendly range of smartphones and Aircel’s expertise in mobile network as well as data innovations to the campaign, which will enable women to easily understand the benefits that Internet can bring to their everyday lives. This will be done by increasing their awareness through Internet training sessions provided jointly by Samsung & Google on both Internet usage and Samsung smartphones powered by Aircel data.

Google’s HWGO was launched in November 2013 to empower women by enabling them to use the Internet. The campaign seeks to address the fact that only 1 in 3 Indian women (Source: June 2013 i-cube, IMRB data) access the Internet. One of the many activities to address this scenario involves Internet training in cities and towns across 12 states in the country, targeting over 4 million literate women from low income groups. The program also targets girl students with an aim to build them as influencers and bring about a long-term societal change.

“At Samsung, we constantly work towards creating technologically advanced devices that empower our customers and make their everyday lives easier and more efficient. Given that Internet access through mobile phones is considered the next technological leapfrog in India, Samsung’s association with Google’s Helping Women Get Online initiative serves as an ideal platform for the brand’s commitment towards opening newer possibilities for people everywhere”, said Mr. Asim Warsi, Vice President, Mobile & IT, Samsung India.

#YouTube to block indie labels who don't sign up for 'YouTube Music Pass'

YouTube will announce within a matter of days that videos on the site featuring recording artists from certain independent labels will be blocked, lest those labels sign licensing agreements that’ll let those songs to be included on a new service coming soon from Google.

But according to Google, their forthcoming service 'YouTube Music Pass' is only intended on helping bands. “Our goal is to continue making YouTube an amazing music experience, both as a global platform for fans and artists to connect, and as a revenue source for the music industry,” a Google spokesman in a statement this week.
Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s head of content and business operations, told the Financial Times that three major record label conglomerates — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group — have all signed on so far. Around 10 percent of the industry is absent such a deal, though, including some top-selling artists who are signed to smaller labels.
“While we wish that we had 100 percent success rate, we understand that is not likely an achievable goal and therefore it is our responsibility to our users and the industry to launch the enhanced music experience,” Kyncl told FT
Currently, YouTube attracts more than one billion viewers each month from around the globe. According to Kyncl, videos will begin being blocked “in a matter of days.”

#Google buys Skybox Imaging for USD 500 mn

Google has entered into an agreement to buy satellite maker Skybox for USD 500 million in cash. The deal is expected to make the search engine giant to serve as a launching pad to send its own satellite to take aerial pictures and provide online access to remote areas of the world. Skybox’s satellites will help keep Google Maps accurate with up-to-date imagery. "Over time, we also hope that Skybox’s team and technology will be able to help improve Internet access and disaster relief — areas Google has long been interested in," said Google in a press statement.

"Skybox and Google share more than just a zip code. We both believe in making information (especially accurate geospatial information) accessible and useful. And to do this, we’re both willing to tackle problems head on — whether it’s building cars that drive themselves or designing our own satellites from scratch.
We are who we are because of the incredible customers, partners, & advisors who have given their time, wisdom, resources & encouragement over the years. To the people who believed in us before anyone else, you know who you are. Thank you.
In addition, we wouldn’t be here without the unwavering support of our friends and family. This has been an incredible journey, and we look forward to working with our new Google family and the world at-large to write the next chapter.
We should point out that our agreement with Google, which is subject to customary approvals and closing conditions, hasn’t closed yet. So in the short term, it will continue to be business as usual at Skybox," said Skybox in its blog posting.
