Six Summer Hair Care tips from @HAIRLINECLINIC

1. Start summer with a trim. You'll get rid of split ends and refresh your style. You might need a mid-season cut, too. Hair really does grow faster in the summer. That's because there are more hairs in the anagen, or growing, stage during late spring and summer than in the dead of winter.

2.Shield your strands from the sun. Make a daily habit of applying a hair care product that contains UV filters (these can be in spray, gel, or cream formulas). These products protect hair from sun damage and help keep color-processed hair from fading. If you'll be spending lots of time outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat. Not only will it keep your strands from getting scorched, it will also protect your scalp and ears, areas that are vulnerable to skin cancer.

3.Saturate strands before taking a dip. If your hair is drenched with clean water or leave-in conditioner, it won't absorb as much saltwater or pool chemicals. It's also a good idea to try to rinse your hair after a swim. If there isn't a shower nearby, keep a spray bottle filled with fresh water.

4.Switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You may be washing your hair more frequently to deal with summer's sweat and grime. Use a clarifying, or anti-residue, shampoo once a week to clear away product buildup and chemicals. Just be sure to follow with a deep-conditioning treatment.

5.Skip the hot tools. At least once or twice a week, give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. wash your hair at night and piling it up in a bun, a braid, or ponytail before you head to bed. "When you wake up, you'll have a nice beachy wave. It's the perfect look for weekends, or make it work-ready with accessories like a thin headband or pretty barrettes.

6.Outwit frizz. Hair that's healthy and well-maintained is your best defense against frizz. Along with regular trims and conditioning, a drop or two of an anti-frizz oil or serum can help smooth hair and add shine.

Robot assisted Kidney Transplant by @ManipalHealth

Explaining the procedure for this surgery Dr. Deepak Dubey, Consultant Urology & Renal Transplant , Manipal Hospitals who conducted the surgery successfully said, “Robotic surgery is 100% accurate and safe. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced precision, dexterity and control even during the most complex procedures. The benefits of this surgery are immense as there are fewer complications such as surgical site infection, lesser pain and blood loss, quicker recovery and smaller scars. The patient and the donor are doing very well and have recovered completely.”

A small cut was made around the umbilicus and kidney was inserted into the recipient’s body. The blood vessels of the kidney were sutured to the blood vessels of the recipient using the Robot. Robotic instruments have 360 degree rotation compared to the human wrist which has only 270 degree rotation and provides the surgeon with a 10x magnified, high-definition, 3D-image of the body's intricate anatomy using key-hole technique. Complete rehearsal was done a day prior to the procedure and the patient and family were given all the relevant information.

Hope for 15 million blinds in India

Now blinds can see!!! Sounds unbelievable, isn't it! Hold your breath. She was totally blind for seven years. But now she could see some coloured flashes. Thanks to a miracle visual stimulator chip that changed her life once and for all. This miracle chip (also called bionic eye) is a retinal implant. And it could restore sight to millions.

A 30-year- old white woman lost her sight eight years ago due to a rare disease which attacks the pigment in the eyes. Within a year she was completely blind. Her world turned dark and colourless.
The blind lady saw some coloured flashes, lines and spots when a stimulator chip was inserted into her brain and signals were sent from a computer.
The moment she saw colour for the first time was a veryemotional experience. It touched us all very deeply as human being, said Dr Nader Pouratian, who performed the operation on her.

North Carolina’s 66-year old blind man Larry Hester got his vision after 33 years of blindness. Larry Hester was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when he was in his early 30s.

On October 1, 2014, Hester became only the seventh person in the US to have a so-called bionic eye - an Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Device.
Hester's wife, Jerry, said her most cherished moment in life came while they were watching a football game. She was sitting in a dark chair, and her skin was enough of a contrast that Hester could see flashes. He reached out and touched her face.

Doctors at the University of California Los Angeles are on the brink of a breakthrough innovation. They are waiting for the permission from US regulators to connect the simulator chip to a camera.

They are hoping to send moving images directly to the brain from the camera mounted on a pair of glasses worn by patient. They will try to send video signals from a system called the Orion I, which captures images in front of the eye of the patient.

The bionic eye system consists of a small digital camera, external processor and an implant with a microchip and stimulating electrodes surgically placed in the back of the eye of the patient.

The movement of bionic eye quite similar to a healthy eye through eye-tracking software within the glasses to detect movement and then adjust the bionic eye.

In a bionic eye system images are converted into electrical pulses and transmitted wirelessly to an array of electrodes attached to the retina. The electrodes stimulate the remaining retina's remaining cells which send the information to the brain.

Bionic eye incorporates technology initially developed by researchers at the Duke Eye Centre; its sophisticated features were further enhanced and marketed by a company called Second Sight Medical Products in USA.
This bionic eye could a big boon for India as well. By a conservative estimates of the Union Health Ministry, of the 37 million people who are blind in the world, more than 10 million are in India. Most of them lose vision with diseases of the retina like macular degeneration.
Every year from the 1st to 7th April to we observe Prevention of Blindness Week to increase awareness about blindness.
Dr Rajat N Agarwal, a scientist of Indian origin at the University of Southern California, made the first bionic eye device in April, 2011.
Bionic eye system has the potential to restore vision to patients blinded due to virtually any reason, including glaucoma, cancer, diabetic retinopathy, or trauma.
Bionic eye has not yet been used on Indian patients mainly because of its high costs; Here in India the device alone costs around Rs 22 lakhs, minus the hospital and surgical costs. Till date only 100 people across the globe have so far got the Bionic Eye implant till date.

With The International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies (IFHNOS) having proclaimed July 27th “World Head and Neck Cancer Day”, HCG along with Pink Hope Patient Support Group organized an awarness campaign on head and neck cancer.

“Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world and in India constitutes 30-40 per cent of all cancers among men. The most common causes are consumption of tobacco and alcohol. Alcohol often taken together with Cigarette makes carcinogens in tobacco enter our tissues better as alcohol is an excellent solvent.  Smokeless tobacco, such as gutka or paan, is a major issue in India. These agents, when taken together, increase the person’s cancer risk by eight or 10 times, accounting for 90 percent of oral cancers and 80 percent of laryngeal cancers in our population. We are the mouth cancer capital of the world owing to this habit. An emerging problem today is human papilloma virus in head and neck cancer, especially tonsil. More than 15% expectant mums in #B'luru are #Diabetic

A recent study in Bengaluru by the Asian Research and Training Institute for Skill Transfer (ARTIST) found more than 15% of pregnant women affected by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), even without a diabetic family history in case of some patients.

'This pregnancy-induced diabetes is seen more in urban areas compared to rural areas,' said Dr Shubha Rama Rao, head of OBG department at St Martha's Hospital. She sees at least 20 to 25 expecting mothers with gestational diabetes out of the 250 patients who visit her every week. Another 25% are inflicted with known diabetes, she added.

It mostly happens due to undisciplined lifestyle, improper diet and lack of exercise before and during pregnancy.

Dr Vidya Desai Mohan, senior gynaecologist at Manipal Hospitals, said, "The hormonal changes in the body make pregnant women easily get diabetes. Women who have the tendency to get diabetes or who are in the borderline will get diabetes easily at this juncture. If they don't change their lifestyle, particularly their diet, it may become uncontrolled. In the last decade there has been a significant increase in the cases of pregnancy induced diabetes."

New immunotherapy trial holds the key for curing type 1 #diabetes

India is home to over 61 million diabetic patients.By 2030, India's diabetes burden is expected to cross the 100 million mark. And by 2040 there will be more than 140 million people likely to be suffering from diabetes in South-east Asia, according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

The search for a treatment for Type 1 diabetes (T1D) International Diabetes Federation's (IDF) will be stepped up with the start of a new phase one clinical trial at Guy’s Hospital in London.
The new immunotherapy treatment, called MultiPepT1De, is being developed to target the autoimmune attack that leads to the development of Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which cells in the pancreas that make insulin are killed by the immune system. The new therapy, MultiPepT1De, will use fragments of proteins, known as peptides, in an effort to stop this process by ‘switching off’ the specific autoimmune attack, and hopefully preventing further destruction of the pancreatic cells.
In laboratory testing, MultiPepT1De is more powerful than the first generation treatment trialled last year and is designed to benefit a higher proportion of those with Type 1 diabetes than its predecessor.
MultiPepT1De was developed with funding from the Wellcome Trust by researchers at King’s College London working in the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London.
MultiPepT1De will be trialled on 24 people with Type 1 diabetes by autumn 2016 and the study team is hopeful of positive results that build upon their previous findings showing that the first generation of MultiPepT1De, called MonoPepT1De, is safe and well tolerated, with some evidence of positive effects in T1D patients.
Professor Mark Peakman, Principal Investigator at the BRC and Head of the Division of Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences at King's, said: “We are really looking forward to seeing the results from this new trial. What we are doing is a big step forward in precision medicine, taking a set of patients with a particular disease and genetic background and giving them an immunotherapy designed in the laboratory specifically for them. Obviously we will need to wait until we have the full results of the trial before we know if it is successful but at this stage we are hopeful.”
Dr Stephen Caddick, Director of Innovations at the Wellcome Trust, said: “Type 1 diabetes is a very serious condition that normally requires lifelong treatment with insulin therapy, but this promising new form of ‘immunotherapy’ could be set to change that. By retraining the immune system to prevent it from attacking insulin-producing cells, it may be possible to slow progression of the disease or even stop it in its tracks. If this approach is proved successful in larger studies it has the potential to transform the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes.”
In the last decade, the number of people in the UK with diabetes has risen by around 65 per cent to 4m, according to Diabetes UK, with around 400,000 adults and children now suffering from Type 1 diabetes. Treating diabetes is estimated to cost the NHS around £10 billion per year.
MultiPepT1De is based on an area of study called peptide immunotherapy, which is currently being applied to a number of other diseases, including allergies and multiple sclerosis.

Mrs India @shilpareddy217 flagged off ‘Glaucoma Awareness Walk’ in #Hyderabad today

Currently, in India, every 8th individual or nearly 40 million aged 40 years or older either has glaucoma or is at risk of developing the disease. 11.2 million Indians suffer from the disease with 1.1 million blind, including children. Glaucoma more commonly affects people beyond the age of 40 years. High myopes, diabetics and those with a positive family history have higher risk of developing glaucoma. Screening family members of patients with glaucoma is mandatory, as this disease can affect siblings and children of patients with glaucoma in up to 10‐20% of cases.

61 million persons worldwide have glaucoma and that is expected to rise to almost 80 million by the year 2020. Blindness from glaucoma is 80% preventable, yet almost 7 million people are blind from glaucoma in the world, and 2/3 of the world's blind and visually impaired are women. Ninety percent of Glaucoma in the country is undetected, mostly due to lack of awareness.
‘Glaucoma Awareness Walk’ was organised by L. V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) on Sunday at Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad
