Terry Fox Run for cancer in Bangalore on September 18

The Terry Fox Run, a charity event aimed at fighting cancer, will be held in Bangalore on Sunday, September 18, 2011. The 4 km run will begin at 9 am from Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium on Cubbon Road. Flagging off the event will be Kannada Cine Star, Ramesh Aravind and Canadian Consul General, Shaun Wedick. Padmashree awardee Pankaj Advani and Tennis Champion Rohan Boppana will also be present at the venue. Spot registration will commence at 8 am. The Terry Fox Run is held in over 3000 locations around the world.

Participants in the fun run can use any non-motorized form of mobility - walking, running, cycling, skating, etc. The event aims to get people from all walks of life to rally around the twin causes of cancer prevention and awareness. The funds from this year’s run will be donated to TATA MEMORIAL CENTRE to be utilized for cancer research. Through a number of local fundraisers, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than USD 500 million over the years.

According to Anu Monga, Committee Chairperson, “All funds collected during the previous runs were utilized to fund local projects in Bangalore. The last few Terry Fox runs have seen huge participation of over 5000 participants and have raised over 25 lakhs. We would like to see more participants out this year, helping to raise more money for the cause. All participants will get a certificate irrespective of the distance they cover.”

Nitin Tolani, the youngster who has been instrumental in bringing the run back to Bangalore after six years, is equally inspiring. Nitin was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at the end of 2008 when he was just 19. Description: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/images/pixel.gifWith his die-hard spirit, he fought to push the cancer into remission. His experience enabled him to connect with Terry Fox’s own ordeal on a very personal level and he was determined to carry the latter’s legacy forward.

“My aim behind organising this run is to spread awareness about rare cancers as there is a lack of knowledge regarding them” said Nitin Tolani. “I would like to thank all the committee members and partners who have volunteered for this event and request all Bangaloreans to come and participate in this run” he added.

The annual event is named after Terry Fox, a young Canadian who was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 18 and had to have his right leg amputated above the knee. While in the hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to help raise funds for cancer research.

He commenced his 'Marathon of Hope' and his fierce determination resulted in his running an average of 42 km a day for 143 days. In September 1980, Terry was forced to end his marathon as the cancer had now spread to his lungs. He died in June 1981 at the age of 22.

Online registration is available for the event. For more details log on to:

McAfee Positioned In The Leader's Quadrant In Analyst Firm's Magic Quadrant For Network Intrusion Prevention

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), today announced that leading research firm Gartner, Inc. has placed the company in the leaders quadrant in its “Magic Quadrant for Network Intrusion Prevention System Appliances,” as published on December 6, 2010.[1] This is 5th time in a row that McAfee has been acknowledged as a leader in Gartner’s Network Intrusion Prevention magic quadrant.

According to Gartner, vendors listed in the leader’s quadrant “demonstrate balanced progress and effort in all execution and vision categories. Their actions raise the competitive bar for all products in the market, and they can change the course of the industry. To remain leaders, vendors must demonstrate a track record of delivering successfully in enterprise IPS deployments and in winning competitive assessments. Leaders produce products that provide high signature quality and low latency, are innovating with or ahead of customer challenges (such as using endpoint intelligence to make more-efficient detections) and have a range of models. Leaders continually win selections and are consistently visible on enterprise shortlists. However, a leading vendor is not a default choice for every buyer, and clients should not assume that they must buy only from vendors in the Leaders quadrant.”

Factors contributing to a company’s ability to execute include products and services, overall viability, sales and marketing execution, and customer experience. Gartner evaluates a company’s completeness of vision by considering its market understanding, sales and marketing strategy, offering or product strategy, business model, and innovation.

“Customers and partners turn to the McAfee® Network IPS solutions because of our comprehensive, integrated and proven approach to network security,” said Rees Johnson, senior vice president and general manager for network security at McAfee. “Our position in the leader’s quadrant of this highly-regarded network IPS assessment confirms our relentless commitment to Network IPS and Network Security. Our approach offers both superior protection and decreased maintenance costs.”

Since pioneering the IPS industry with the world’s first purpose-built intrusion detection and prevention appliance, the McAfee® Network Security Platform has continued to raise the bar for next-generation IPS technology. Earlier this quarter, McAfee was recognized in the NSS Labs IPS comparative vendor study, and had the highest accuracy and throughput of any product tested to date. “We believe the NSS comparative study, combined with Gartner’s independent evaluation of our Network IPS solutions, demonstrates our undisputed leadership in Network IPS and Network Security,” said Johnson

McAfee, Inc. Releases Report on Web2.0 Technology Adoption at Workplace

McAfee, Inc. world’s largest dedicated security company released a new report titled “Web 2.0: A Complex Balancing Act” in collaboration with Purdue University’s CERIAS research group. The report highlights the use, benefits and perceived risks of Web 2.0 technologies’ adoption at the Indian workplace and presents the corresponding security concerns that organizations face today. It also states that the most significant consequences from inappropriate social media usage are loss of reputation, brand, or client confidence.

Online Survey
The survey was conducted amongst more than 1,000 organizational decision-makers in 17 countries and shows high adoption of Web 2.0 in the enterprise. More than 75 percent of organizations reported using Web 2.0 solutions for many business functions. Web 2.0 adoption is lowest in the United States and the Commonwealth countries of the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. While adoption rates vary across countries, India along with Brazil and Spain, leads the adoption of Web 2.0 technology for business activities.

“Indian businesses are finding huge opportunities in the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, yet concerns about security and employee productivity hinder decisions to embrace it completely,” said Ambarish Deshpande, Director - Channel and Alliances & Mid-market, South Asia. “As Web 2.0 technologies gain popularity, organizations are faced with a choice of allowing them free access, blocking them, or embracing them while managing the tools in a secure way.”

Key Report Findings:

· Web 2.0 adoption rates are high, reaching 90 percent or above in Brazil, Spain and India. India is ranked second amongst seventeen counties polled in this report: Primary reason for adopting Web 2.0: to create new revenue streams, 78% of respondents from India attributed market drivers such as customers and partners as the primary reason for Web 2.0 adoption

· Indian firms ranked in the middle regarding use of social media policies despite ranking first amongst the countries that view Web 2.0 usage as threatening: 11% of organizations surveyed in India did not have a social media policy

· New revenue streams emerged as the highest driver of Web 2.0 adoption. Sixty-eight percent of organizations that use Web 2.0 report that expanded use of Web 2.0 technologies could create new revenue streams for their organizations.

· Security is the second leading concern for Web 2.0 technologies: One third of the respondents name security risks as their primary concern with Web 2.0 and the reason Web 2.0 technologies are not used more widely in business.

· Indian employers are more likely to trust their employees with Web 2.0 than countries such as UK, Australia , France and Spain

· Six out of 10 organizations have had at least one type of security incident and countries such as India, with the highest adoption rates were more likely to have multiple incidents and report larger losses: 5% of mid-sized organizations reported that they had suffered a data loss that had cost them more than $25,000. Of these 25% were from China, 14% from France and 11% from India

· Organizations in India and Brazil, which have seen high losses from security incidents, are most likely to budget for Web 2.0-specific security solutions: Three quarters of Indian organizations and more than half of Brazilian organizations do so

Executives and industry experts, who contributed to the research, agreed that successful organizational use of Web 2.0 is a complex balancing act. Enterprises must analyze business challenges and opportunities while mitigating the risks, and ensure that staff training and robust technologies are in place to avoid cyber attacks.

MCAFEE, INC. UNVEILS VISION FOR NEXT GENERATION SECURITY SOLUTIONS

Neo e-Watch Media
McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE), today unveiled its “Security Connected” initiative, enabling partners, developers and customers to apply a more intelligent, effective and sustainable approach to securing digital information. As part of its Security Connected initiative, McAfee is announcing the first two of four new connected security platforms, McAfee Endpoint Security 9 and McAfee Security Management 5

With threats sharply on the rise in both quantity and complexity, an uncertain economic environment, and an insatiable desire to deploy new, more competitive computing models, IT organizations can no longer sustain the traditional model of tacking on new security products for every new threat. By connecting mobile with endpoint security, network security, content security, and the cloud, McAfee is coordinating security defenses to enable businesses to be more agile. McAfee offers organizations correlated and comprehensive intelligence which in turn dramatically reduces risk, enhances their security posture, helps meet compliance regulations, and drives up operational efficiencies.

Security too often is being driven from different silos within businesses. From mobile devices, PCs, and tablets, to mission-critical networks, servers, hosted applications, cloud services, virtual machines, and databases - bring dozens or hundreds of different security technologies and disparate management paradigms with them. More often than not, there is no correlation or integration making security very expensive, inflexible and ineffective to manage and maintain. Today, businesses require more than just security technologies, they need integrated intelligent security that provides a global view of threats, vulnerabilities, and the countermeasures to address them. Businesses are moving from securing components to understanding and measuring the security of a business as a whole.

“The IT landscape is rapidly changing,” said Chris Christiansen, vice president, security products and services at IDC. “Virtualization of servers and endpoints, shifting of data and services to the cloud, and the consumerization of IT is creating new holes in previously protected systems and networks. This is a fundamental shift from even just a few years ago when the bifurcation points between business and personal, outside and inside, and us and them was more visible.”

Enabling Businesses Through Security

By taking a connected approach, McAfee is moving security from a perceived business inhibitor to a true business enabler. Applying “Security Connected” principles and vision, IT professionals can more confidently say “yes” to new applications and approaches.

· McAfee Security Connected components include:

· Proactive security through built-in integration and intelligence

· Global Threat Intelligence: Unmatched threat research and content capability to deliver predictive threat analysis, reputational scoring, cloud delivery and intelligence in depth to power connected security technologies.

· Broad portfolio of countermeasures: Integrated security for PCs, Mac, Smartphone’s, tablets, storage, embedded, silicon, network perimeter, datacenter, web gateways, mail security, content, and so on with a choice of on premise, SaaS, or hybrid delivery models.

· Intelligent Security Management Platform: Integrating disparate solutions and extending beyond a simple reporting dashboard to a rational, informed, scalable and situationally aware security management interface

· Predictive security solutions that can proactively find and protect against vulnerabilities, target and predict threats based on policies and events

· Partner Ecosystem: Delivering services through an open ecosystem of partners to ensure customers can take full advantage of the latest technology from both McAfee and our extensive list of ecosystem partners.

· McAfee Connected: program is aimed at helping partners worldwide ensure product and service compatibility with McAfee solutions. The program’s testing process ensures that the third-party hardware, software and services that customers choose perform well, and are compatible with, McAfee technology.

“Disjointed point products simply don’t work for today’s businesses,” said George Kurtz, chief technology officer, McAfee, Inc. “Security is now mission-critical and strategic to the business. It needs to be connected and correlated, with shared intelligence, and centrally managed. Products still need to be best-of-breed, without trading off quality, and IT needs to be empowered to say ‘yes’ to data and applications, at any time, on any device, from any location.”

McAfee believes that the changes in business today will require the move from simply securing components, to understanding and measuring security more holistically. Security needs have morphed and now require a more connected approach. To address this requirement, McAfee has introduced two new platform offerings to advance its “Security Connected” vision and initiative: McAfee Endpoint Security 9 and McAfee Security Management 5.

McAfee Endpoint Security 9

Provides protection anywhere, anytime on any device including desktops, servers, virtual machines, mobile devices and embedded systems. With its new integrated Endpoint Security platform, McAfee now delivers “Security Connected” for the full range of traditional and emerging endpoints to help organizations keep up with the increasingly complex IT environment

McAfee Security Management 5

A new comprehensive centralized management platform that delivers proactive risk management, integration with business operations, and coordinated security defenses. It provides a full risk profile across multiple security layers, vendors, products and solutions resulting in a dramatically enhanced security posture, lower operational costs and a “Security Connected” approach to understanding the threat landscape and managing business risk.

McAfee and Riverbed Expand Partnership To Provide Integrated Security And WAN Optimization In One Appliance

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) and Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced an expansion of their partnership to now deliver Web 2.0 security capabilities on the Riverbed® Services Platform (RSP). This partnership underscores the two companies’ commitment to delivering best-of-breed, comprehensive security coupled with wide area network (WAN) optimization solutions for distributed enterprises. The McAfee® Web Gateway solution delivers comprehensive security for all Web 2.0 traffic, and coupled with the award-winning Riverbed Steelhead® appliance, enables a superior level of proactive Web 2.0 protection from headquarters to branch offices.

Advt. Turnkey solutions for Web 2.0 applications visit us www.neoewatchmedia.com

The RSP is a virtualized, extensible data services platform integrated with the Steelhead appliance hardware that allows customers to deploy multiple best-of-breed edge services that formerly required dedicated servers. Customers can deploy virtualized applications, such as McAfee Web Gateway Security, directly on the RSP to further minimize the hardware infrastructure footprint at the branch office, thereby reducing operational overhead. The new joint solution complements the existing McAfee® Firewall Enterprise software, which is currently available on the RSP. By leveraging the best-of-breed solutions from McAfee and Riverbed in a single appliance, enterprises are able to deliver accelerated data and application access to users while protecting critical information and infrastructure from security threats.

The consumerization of IT has leveraged the popularity of Web 2.0 applications in the enterprise, and social networking applications have increasingly become a primary component of mainstream marketing and sales initiatives. Social media applications, such as Facebook and Twitter, provide a great service to marketing efforts, but are also a new source of targeted attacks by cybercriminals looking to infiltrate corporate systems. Preventing intellectual property leaks via social media is also a major concern among organizations, especially with the lack of visibility and control over multiple remote offices. The joining of forces between the leading WAN optimization provider and the world’s largest dedicated security company addresses the need for advanced Web 2.0 security, by providing customers with intent analysis, URL filtering, McAfee anti-virus, anti-malware protection and WAN optimization to protect Web 2.0 experiences throughout the organization, regardless of location.

“Organizations realize that Web 2.0 is important, but often security measures do not match the growth rate at which employees are using these applications,” said David Scholtz, senior vice president of worldwide strategic alliances at McAfee. “To prevent malicious Web attacks and data leakage, organizations need a new level of control and by adding McAfee Web Gateway to the Riverbed and McAfee Enterprise Firewall solution, customers now have the most comprehensive security solution in a WAN optimization platform available.”

“Riverbed enables its customers to consolidate edge services at the branch office, helping organizations to reduce the IT footprint in the branch, simplify IT management and reduce costs while still delivering LAN-like application performance to distributed employees,” said Venugopal Pai, vice president of global alliances at Riverbed. “By running McAfee Web Gateway security on the RSP, enterprises experience these benefits along with the ability to proactively protect themselves against the threats that attack systems via social media and other Web 2.0 applications.”

By scanning a Web page’s active content, McAfee Web Gateway security emulates and understands the behavior and uses predictive modeling to proactively protect against zero-day and targeted attacks as they occur. The McAfee and Riverbed partnership enables Web experiences throughout the organization to be more:

• Productive-- The solution provides granular control over how and where Web applications are used

• Secure-- Scans outbound requests and posts along with all inbound traffic

• Efficient-- Improves application performance and reduces bandwidth congestion

Availability

The solution is globally available today.

Planning holiday in US, beware of cybercrooks

Cybercriminals are taking advantage of a relatively new U.S. requirement for travelers from these countries, who register online for travel authorization, and are spreading confusion about the process. Cybercrooks know that the only way to register for travel authorization is online, through Homeland Security’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), and they have been busy building phony websites designed to take your information and money.

When McAfee recently did a simple search for “ESTA,” “ESTA form,” or “ESTA online registration” a variety of dangerous websites showed up in search results. What’s more, incidents of these fake visa sites have escalated over the last two weeks following the government’s announcement that it is enacting a $14 fee for travel authorization, beginning September 8, 2010. Now scammers are asking for credit card numbers and financial information as well as personal details on these fake sites.

Due to this visitors to these fake sites face a series of dangers, including loss of money, identity theft, an infected computer, and even burglary since the scammers know what dates visitors will be away from home. Victims may also not be able to travel to the U.S. as planned since they did not get official travel authorization.

We would like to share more information with you on these threats and how consumers can protect themselves from becoming a victim. We would be glad to put you in touch with a McAfee expert on the same.

McAfee Comment on Patch Tuesday & XP SP2 End of Support

Microsoft on Tuesday released four Security Bulletins to address five security vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an attacker to take full control over a vulnerable Windows computer.

Among the fixes is a patch for a critical vulnerability in the Windows Help and Support Center , a feature designed to provide assistance to users. This vulnerability was irresponsible disclosed to the public by Google employee Tavis Ormandy prior to Microsoft providing a fix. Cybercriminals have already taken advantage of the vulnerability and exploited it to attack Windows users. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS10-042.mspx)

"McAfee Labs has seen malware in the wild that exploits this o-day vulnerability," said Dave Marcus, research and communications director for McAfee Labs. "Security researchers need to work closely with software vendors to ensure vulnerabilities are patched in the most expedient method and timeline possible, without putting users at risk."

In addition to the patches, Microsoft today officially ended support for Windows XP Service Pack 2. This means that computers running Windows XP with SP2 will no longer get security updates from Microsoft.

"Many enterprises and consumer users still deploy and depend heavily on applications that run on this Windows build. It is unclear how much risk and expense the end of support will cause users worldwide but we expect cybercriminals to capitalize on this opportunity," said Marcus. "Users of Windows XP SP2 should consider migration options and robust security solutions to mitigate risk."

McAfee recommends that users install Microsoft's patches as soon as possible. Home users should use Windows Automatic Updates. Business users need to have a risk management strategy in place to prioritize the patches.

According to Gartner, vendors who appear in the leader’s quadrant “have demonstrated good understanding of client needs and offer comprehensive capabilities in all three functional areas — network, discovery and endpoint — directly or through well-established partnerships and tight integration. They offer aggressive road maps, and they will need to execute on those road maps, fully incorporate enhanced features currently in development and address evolving market needs to remain in the Leaders quadrant.”

MCAFEE, INC. PROVIDES INCREASED PROTECTION AGAINST MALWARE AND BOTNETS

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) today announced the release of McAfee® Web Gateway version 7 in response to the overwhelming increase in Web-borne malware and botnets. As the reliance on Web 2.0 applications increases, so does the risk to organizations that need flexible access to “Web 2.0 ready” security. The new platform enables secure end-user access to today’s Web 2.0 applications. By extending its lead in proactive malware scanning and further integrating with McAfee Labs’ cloud-based global threat intelligence, McAfee provides unmatched protection for enterprises and service providers with its scalable platform and virtual appliance offerings.

The use of targeted attacks leveraging Web-borne malware are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent. Most of these attacks are “zero day” and are used to capture resources for ever-expanding botnets or to steal business information including personal or customer information, records, financial transactions and intellectual property. McAfee Web Gateway platform enables employee access to authorized Web 2.0 applications, while greatly reducing risk by combining local and cloud-based protection, powered by McAfee Labs.

“Today’s most prevalent threat to enterprises is from zero-day, Web-borne malware,” said Dan Ryan, executive vice president and general manager of the Network Security business unit at McAfee. “McAfee provides protection at every stage of an attack, as demonstrated during Operation Aurora, which targeted Google and dozens of other companies. Reputation management is an essential part of that protection.”

McAfee Web Gateway takes a bi-directional hybrid security approach that includes a new intent-based anti-malware scanning engine, along with several cloud-based technologies. Integration with real-time McAfee® Artemis™ technology protects organizations against viruses, provides mobile filtering for remote users and expands Web reputation capabilities. Through Web reputation and Global Threat Intelligence, the platform blocks access to infected websites, stops malicious content from downloading and prevents back-channel communication of infected machines.

“Our experience with McAfee Web Gateway version 7 is extremely positive. It allows for additional flexibility and granular control over the polices that we create,” said Tristan Hoar, Technical Analyst for Service Birmingham, a provider of internet service for more than 185,000 users. “This will ultimately allow us to achieve enhanced performance from the existing infrastructure as we can tune our polices to ensure the filtering decision is made in fewer steps.”

With this release, McAfee offers the following enhancements:

These integrations help organizations achieve a significant return on their investments while leveraging the benefits of Web 2.0 enabled applications.

IIT Bombay and Applied Materials to Collaborate on Renewable Energy

IIT Bombay, India’s highest rated university and a leader in education and research, and Applied Materials, Inc., the world’s largest supplier of equipment to the semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic industries, announced today they will broaden the scope of their ongoing research collaboration to develop new energy-related initiatives.

As part of this collaboration, Applied Materials will donate three process chambers to IIT Bombay for depositing thin films on solar cells using physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technologies. Applied Materials will also work with IIT Bombay research teams to set up a wet chemistry laboratory for developing new materials. These materials will be used for a variety of renewable energy-focused applications, including the fabrication of next-generation solar cells.

As a symbolic representation of its commitment to clean technology and a sustainable future, Applied Materials will also donate a solar panel system to IIT Bombay. The panels will be connected to energy-efficient LEDs that will light the University’s main avenue.

Professor Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay said, “Research in sustainable energy solutions represents the future. This initiative to develop state-of-the-art solar cells is a small, yet important, step forward towards the vision of building a solar India. Interactions with global Industry leaders like Applied Materials have been extremely fruitful for the students and faculty and it is heartening to see the collaboration between IIT Bombay and Applied Materials expanded even further. These new donations to the Institute will enhance our existing research to important and socially relevant high-technology areas.”

IIT Bombay was specifically mentioned in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission as a location for the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research & Education. This honor recognizes IIT Bombay’s contributions over the years in establishing collaborative relationships and initiatives with industry. This new alliance with Applied Materials extends the Institute’s mission of setting up this National Centre.

Elaborating on this occasion, Dr. Randhir Thakur, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Applied’s Silicon Systems Business Group, said, “Applied Materials is dedicated to working with leading universities and institutions such as IIT Bombay to develop the innovations that will improve people’s lives. We are excited to expand our work with IIT Bombay to the area of solar energy and to serve as a catalyst in advancing India’s renewable energy capabilities.”

The Applied Materials Nanomanufacturing Laboratory was created at IIT Bombay in 2007 with Applied’s donation of several semiconductor processing systems. The success of this research collaboration led Applied Materials to broaden the scope of its engagement with IIT Bombay with a new investment focusing on renewable energy.

Solar cells are used to convert sunlight directly into electricity. Arrays of these cells hold significant promise for a country like India, which is blessed with many sunny days. India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) launched by the Prime Minister in January 2010 emphasizes the need for renewable solar energy for India, and targets a 20,000MW of solar power generation by the year 2022.
