MCAFEE WARNS CONSUMERS OF THE “TWELVE SCAMS OF CHRISTMAS”

‘Tis the season for consumers to spend more time online - shopping for gifts, looking for great holiday deals on new digital gadgets, e-planning family get-togethers and of course, using online or mobile banking to make sure they can afford it all. But before logging on from a PC, Mac, or mobile device, consumers should look out for the “12 Scams of Christmas,” the dozen most dangerous online scams this holiday season, revealed today by McAfee.

“Cybercriminals rub their hands with glee when they think of the holidays,” said Gary Davis, director of consumer product marketing at McAfee. “Consumers are making travel plans, shopping for gifts and bargains, updating Facebook and connecting with friends. However, the vast majority have no security protection for their smartphones or tablets, despite using them heavily during the holiday season. Consumers need to stay one step ahead of this season’s cyber-scrooges, and make sure they have protection for all of their Internet-enabled devices. Otherwise, they could risk giving the bad guys the biggest gift of all – their own personal and financial information.”

McAfee’s 12 Scams of Christmas

1. Mobile Malware: A recent National Retail Federation (NRF) survey, dated October 19, found that 52.6 percent of U.S. consumers who own a smartphone said they will be using their device for holiday-shopping related activities—whether it’s to research products, redeem coupons, or purchase holiday gifts. Malware targeted at mobile devices is on the rise, and Android smartphones are most at risk. McAfee cites a 76 percent increase in malware targeted at Android devices in the second quarter of 2011 over the first, making it the most targeted smartphone platform.

New malware has recently been found that targets QR codes, a digital barcode that consumers might scan with their smartphone to find good deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, or just to learn about products they want to buy.

2. Malicious Mobile Applications -These are mobile apps designed to steal information from smartphones, or send out expensive text messages without a user’s consent. Dangerous apps are usually offered for free, and masquerade as fun applications, such as games. For example, last year, 4.6 million Android smartphone users downloaded a suspicious wallpaper app that collected and transmitted user data to a site in China.

3. Phony Facebook Promotions and Contests – Who doesn’t want to win some free prizes or get a great deal around the holidays? Unfortunately, cyberscammers know that these are attractive lures and they have sprinkled Facebook with phony promotions and contests aimed at gathering personal information.

A recent scam advertised two free airline tickets, but required participants to fill out multiple surveys requesting personal information.

4. Scareware, or Fake Antivirus software – Scareware is the fake antivirus software that tricks someone into believing that their computer is at risk—or already infected—so they agree to download and pay for phony software. This is one of the most common and dangerous Internet threats today, with an estimated one million victims falling for this scam each day. In October 2010, McAfee reported that scareware represented 23% of all dangerous Internet links, and it has been resurgent in recent months.

5. Holiday Screensavers—Bringing holiday cheer to your home or work PC sounds like a fun idea to get into the holiday spirit, but be careful. A recent search for a Santa screensaver that promises to let you “fly with Santa in 3D” is malicious. Holiday-themed ringtones and e-cards have been known to be malicious too.

6. Mac Malware – Until recently, Mac users felt pretty insulated from online security threats, since most were targeted at PCs. But with the growing popularity of Apple products, for both business and personal use, cybercriminals have designed a new wave of malware directed squarely at Mac users. According to McAfee LabsTM, as of late 2010, there were 5,000 pieces of malware targeting Macs, and this number is increasing by 10 percent month on month.

7. Holiday Phishing Scams – Phishing is the act of tricking consumers into revealing information or performing actions they wouldn’t normally do online using phony email or social media posts. Cyberscammers know that most people are busy around the holidays so they tailor their emails and social messages with holiday themes in the hopes of tricking recipients into revealing personal information.

· A common holiday phishing scam is a phony notice from UPS, saying you have a package and need to fill out an attached form to get it delivered. The form may ask for personal or financial details that will go straight into the hands of the cyberscammer.

· Banking phishing scams continue to be popular and the holiday season means consumers will be spending more money—and checking bank balances more often. From July to September of this year, McAfee Labs identified approximately 2,700 phishing URLs per day.

· Smishing –SMS phishing—remains a concern. Scammers send their fake messages via a text alert to a phone, notifying an unsuspecting consumer that his bank account has been compromised. The cybercriminals then direct the consumer to call a phone number to get it re-activated—and collects the user’s personal information including Social Security number, address, and account details.

8. Online Coupon Scams – An estimated 63 percent of shoppers search for online coupons or deals when they purchase something on the Internet, and recent NRF data (October 19, 2011) shows that consumers are also using their smartphones (17.3 percent) and tablets (21.5 percent) to redeem those coupons. But watch out, because the scammers know that by offering an irresistible online coupon, they can get people to hand over some of their personal information.

· One popular scam is to lure consumers with the hope of winning a "free" iPad. Consumers click on a "phishing" site, which can result in email spam and possibly dealing with identify theft.

· Consumers are offered an online coupon code and once they agree, are asked to provide personal information, including credit-card details, passwords and other financial data.

9. Mystery Shopper Scams – Mystery shoppers are people who are hired to shop in a store and report back on the customer service. Sadly, scammers are now using this fun job to try to lure people into revealing personal and financial information. There have been reports of scammers sending text messages to victims, offering to pay them $50 an hour to be a mystery shopper, and instructing them to call a number if they are interested. Once the victim calls, they are asked for their personal information, including credit card and bank account numbers.

10. Hotel "Wrong Transaction" Malware Emails – Many people travel over the holidays, so it is no surprise that scammers have designed travel-related scams in the hopes of getting us to click on dangerous emails. In one recent example, a scammer sent out emails that appeared to be from a hotel, claiming that a "wrong transaction" had been discovered on the recipient’s credit card. It then asked them to fill out an attached refund form. Once opened, the attachment downloads malware onto their machine.

11. “It” Gift Scams – Every year there are hot holiday gifts, such as toys and gadgets, that sell out early in the season. When a gift is hot, not only do sellers mark up the price, but scammers will also start advertising these gifts on rogue websites and social networks, even if they don’t have them. So, consumers could wind up paying for an item and giving away credit card details only to receive nothing in return. Once the scammers have the personal financial details, there is little recourse.

12. “I’m away from home” Scammers – Posting information about a vacation on social networking sites could actually be dangerous. If someone is connected with people they don’t know on Facebook or other social networking sites, they could see their post and decide that it may be a good time to rob them. Furthermore, a quick online search can easily turn up their home address.

“We don’t want consumers to be haunted by the scams of holidays past, present and future,” said Jim Walter, manager at McAfee Labs. “With the increase in malware and other attacks on smartphones, tablets and Macs, users need to stay vigilant and ensure they protect all of their devices, not just their home PC – they can’t afford to leave the door open to cyber-grinches during the busy holiday season.”

How to Protect Yourself

Internet users can protect themselves from cybercrime with the following quick tips from McAfee:

* Only download mobile apps from official app stores, such as iTunes and the Android Market, and read user reviews before downloading them.

* Be extra vigilant when reviewing and responding to emails.

* Watch out for too-good-to-be-true offers on social networks (like free airline tickets). Never agree to reveal your personal information just to participate in a promotion.

* Don’t accept requests on social networks from people you don’t know in real life. Wait to post pictures and comments about your vacation until you’ve already returned home.

SportsNest launches online purchase of sporting, fitness and adventure gear

SportsNest, an e-commerce company focused on online sale of sporting, fitness and adventure gear, was launched today. The company (www.sportsnest.com), lead by a team of entrepreneurs and ex-sportsmen, aims to create a differentiated online experience while purchasing sporting and outdoor gear. The company has been funded by Blume Ventures, a micro-venture fund that invests in tech-enabled businesses, with seed funding of upto $250K.

SportsNest currently has over 25 categories for men, women and children that include clothing, footwear, fitness and adventure equipment. Over 5,000 products are available on the online store today and this is slated to go up to 25,000 SKUs soon. Customers can get their products shipped for free across India with an option of ‘Cash-on-Delivery’ and also have access to 24X7 customer care.

According to Sanjay Rao, who is also the co-founder of SportingMindz (a company focused on video analytics and predictive analysis in sports), SportsNest’s philosophy focuses on ‘playing smarter’, which involves little-known, often ignored sporting advice which helps a sports-enthusiast make the right buying decision. A panel of sporting and fitness experts from several sporting disciplines provide a buyer with sporting advice which helps him make the right choice based on the level of his game and his budget. What’s more, smart initiatives in procurement and brand tie-ups ensure that great deals are always on offer.

“With over 10 million e-commerce users in India, the digital consumer story is growing at an exponential pace due to its user friendly format. However, sporting, fitness and adventure segments are rather underserviced despite increasing demand. Customers do not have easy access to a wide range of latest products, accessories or brands. Therefore, by offering these on an online platform and combining it with expert advice and other value adds, we intend to create a whole new segment within the sports category,” said Sanjay Rao, Director, SportsNest.

“Sportsnest is consistent with Blume's philosophy of picking great teams that have a desire to disrupt, however small the disruption may seem. Sports goods purchases, as an experience, must be one of the worst retail experiences that I've personally had and there seems no sign of improvement. An odd organized retail brand format in a mall isn't sufficient to cater to the ever more sporty consumers. SportsNest will deliver the promise of convenience, price and variety on the site but we're more excited about how they plan to take customer engagement and satisfaction to a new level, with some nifty innovations,” said Karthik Reddy, Managing Partner, Blume Ventures.

In addition to the online store that is up and running, SportsNest plans to give its customers the ability to experience its products and buy them offline as well.

About SportsNest

SportsNest is India's premier online and retail destination for sporting goods. The company provides a wide range of branded sports and fitness equipment, adventure sports gear, t-shirts and accessories to men, women and kids. The SportsNest founders include sportspersons who have represented the country at the international arena and successful sports entrepreneurs (SportingMindz).

About Blume Ventures

Blume Ventures typically invests in technology focused / technology enabled sector agnostic early-stage companies with funding ranging from $50K to $250 via seed investments. It was founded by two Mumbai Angel members Karthik Reddy and Sanjay Nath, who have invested as individual angels in companies such as Apalya, inMobi and Onward Mobility. Blume Ventures has invested in other consumer Internet companies such as moneysights and Adepto (and their product Trolly) earlier this year

YAHOO! INDIA 2011YEAR-IN-REVIEW

ahoo! India, the premier digital media company today announced its 2011 Year in Review* (http://in.yearinreview.yahoo.com// ), that offers an annual look-back into the biggest trends of the year, as gleaned from the millions of searches that took place on Yahoo!, plus the editorial selection of what users read, recommended and shared most on the Yahoo! network. With Yahoo! India reaching more than 80% (Source: ComScore) of the online audience in India, the Year in Review (YIR) is a true reflection of what captured the imagination of the Indian Internet user.

The 2011 Year in Review which is available in 17 versions including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States, is being released for the third year in India.

The Internet audience in India witnessed a sprawling array of developments around wins, fights, bizarre stories, fond farewells, momentous events, celeb babies and facepalm moments - across politics, entertainment and sports.

This year, India gave glamour a back seat and reveled in politics. Celebs who routinely vie for top billing on the search charts were upstaged by Anna Hazare, who swayed the public with his fight against corruption — a battle that helped him emerge as the top newsmaker in India. His constant challenge to the highest government authorities, and his 288-hour fast at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi made him the face of India’s battle against corruption.

Our very own ‘Master-blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar was followed by millions as he yet again proved the inspiration behind a famous Indian win — in this case, the Cricket World Cup 2011, which fittingly came to a triumphant end in his own home of Mumbai. The teen prodigy turned world-class player is this year's Sportsperson of the Year, with his elusive 100th ton notwithstanding.

Bollywood's 'Sheila' Katrina Kaif, who had topped the charts last year, slipped to third place in 2011 thanks to Hazare and Tendulkar — but then, an item number could hardly compete with a nationwide movement or a World Cup triumph.

“From frenetic cricket mania to the politics of ‘honesty’, the Indian Internet audience witnessed interesting happenings in the year 2011, right here on Yahoo!; be it breaking news, engaging cricket coverage, consuming celebrity and Bollywood content, Yahoo! is where millions of Indians came every day to connect with their passions. The Yahoo! Year in Review is truly reflective of the pulse of the Internet user in India – a snapshot of what mattered most to them”, said Prem Panicker, Managing Editor, Yahoo! India.

The Yahoo! Year in Review goes beyond just the top searches, with an editorial selection of top trends in 11 other categories. Mamta Banerjee, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Amma Jayalalitha all grabbed positions in the Top Newsmakers Category. The performance of heavy metal gods Metallica, the DK Bose saga, and Lady Gaga all pepped up the music world and secured places in The Year in Song category.

Some Bizzare stories such as PETA launching a porn site, a woman giving birth to her own grandchild, and kissing can cause cavities, intrigued the nation. Kolaveri (The killer instinct), Poschim Bongo (newly acquired name of West Bengal), the Royal Wedding, Tihar Jail (Tiharis: A Raja, Kanimozhi, Suresh Kalmadi), ‘I’ (for Innovation guru Steve Jobs), and DK Bose emerged as the hottest Buzzwords online.

Aishwarya-Abhishek’s baby, Konkana-Ranveer’s baby, and Lara Dutta’s pregnancy were all followed with huge interest — never mind that India's population continued to explode. Breakups such as Priyanka-Shahid and John-Bipasha featured high in the interestingly named category Celeb babies and heartbreaks.

Controversies found their way into the report in the listings for the Facepalm category with Miss India Universe Vasuki Sunkavalli’s alleged plagiarism, Rakhi Sawant’s marriage aspirations, and Kiran Bedi’s travelling economy making their way into the charts.

More trends revolved around Notable quotes, Fond farewells, and Top10 automobile launches captivated the attention of the Indian Internet audience.

About the Yahoo! India 2011 Year in Review Methodology To develop the Yahoo! Year in Review, our editors analyze user’s interest patterns on what they searched for, read, recommended and shared. It takes into account number of factors including absolute volume and growth from previous periods to see which themes and trends bubble to the surface. Individuals and their preferences always remain anonymous.

Enhanced Micro Focus SilkTest Suite Cuts Testing Costs, Helps Build Better Software Faster

Micro Focus (LSE:MCRO.L), the leading provider of enterprise application modernization, testing and management solutions, today announced the general availability of SilkTest 2011. The new suite of application testing software enables organizations to achieve the highest level of quality, flexibility and scalability possible throughout the entire software development lifecycle.

SilkTest now increases the quality of mission-critical applications running on any terminal-based host system through its integration with Micro Focus Rumba. In addition, SilkTest increases flexibility by extending its Web 2.0 capabilities with additional support for Silverlight, as well as enhanced support for Adobe Flex and Firefox. Additional features include User Access Compliance to support effective testing in standard user privileges, which not only makes it easier for users to work with SilkTest, but also eases admin control of the desktop environment.

As product lifecycles shrink, development practices must adapt to meet the demands of business. Organizations once had the luxury of time between product releases, but today’s fast business pace demands better software quality and quicker delivery times with fewer resources. SilkTest delivers advanced test automation capabilities that drive productivity, predictability and cost savings throughout the software development lifecycle. This latest release continues to push the boundaries of software development by enabling business domain experts to collaborate on test automation.

“Our mission with SilkTest is to help organizations achieve predictability and productivity throughout the development lifecycle and to drive smart innovation that enables effective collaboration across lines of business,” said Archie Roboostoff, Borland Portfolio Director, Micro Focus. “Where our competitors might focus on throwing complicated technology at a problem, we focus on fostering collaboration between the people developing the technology. Our first priority is providing our customers with tools that turn whiteboard ideas into customer-facing products faster than anyone in the industry. From cost savings to faster product delivery cycles, organizations using SilkTest will continue to build better software faster, regardless of framework, platform or system.”

New benefits and features of SilkTest:

o Complete integration with Rumba, Micro Focus’ leading terminal emulation product, delivers a unique visual testing approach to 3270 and 5250 applications. SilkTest’s object recognition and synchronization techniques, coupled with its ease of use, contribute to a productive and efficient testing experience.

o Support for Silverlight and Flex applications for both standalone applications and embedded applications provides a more seamless, holistic and realistic testing experience and shortens the time to market for Web 2.0 applications

o Cross browser support for Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 5 and 6 enables same test scripts to be used without modification for modern versions of both browsers, greatly reducing the test maintenance effort. One test working across all browsers reduces test cycles and gets products out to market faster than ever.

SilkTest is widely used by companies to replace repetitive manual testing with automated tests that can be run on a regular basis. Its ability to create powerful test automation across a broad range of application technologies helps organizations check software continuously as it changes, ensuring that defects don’t occur and that the applications run reliably. When using additional tools in the Borland solution set from Micro Focus, such as Caliber and SilkCentral Test Manager, customers will find that the time it takes to get an idea off the whiteboard and into the hands of an end user will be greatly reduced.

Katrina Kaif named the most dangerous Celebrity in Indian Cyber Space by McAfee

Katrina Kaif emerged as the most dangerous celebrity in the Indian cyber space, followed by Deepika Padukone; according to internet security company McAfee . McAfee researched popular culture’s most famous people to reveal the riskiest celebrity sportsmen, actors and politicians across the web to reveal the ‘Most Dangerous Indian Celebrity.’

Commenting on the findings of the report, Venkatasubrahmanyam Krishnapur, Senior Director, McAfee India, said, "In a celebrity crazy country such as India, cyber criminals find it very lucrative to use the names of popular figures as keywords to lure people to websites with malicious software. This year’s study found movie stars top the “most dangerous” list, while sports stars and politicians are among the safest.”

Fans looking for results on search engines using strings such as ‘name of celebrity’ combined with words like ‘free downloads’, ‘hot pictures’, ‘screen savers’, and ‘videos’ are at risk of running themselves into websites with malicious software and online threats designed to steal personal information.

“Searching for top celebrities continues to generate risky results,” said Paula Greve, director of Web security research at McAfee. “Consumers should be particularly aware of malicious content hiding in ‘tiny’ places like shortened URLs that can spread virally in social networking sites, or through e-mails and text messages from friends.”

The study for ‘Most Dangerous Celebrity’ used the McAfee® SiteAdvisor® site ratings which indicate the sites that are risky to search for celebrity names on the web and calculate an overall risk percentage. MCAFEE LABS EXAMINES THREAT LANDSCAPE IN LATEST EDITION

McAfee today announced the 2011 edition of McAfee Security Journal, a publication designed to inform security executives and technical personnel on cutting-edge topics to help them make better-informed security decisions. The Journal, now in its seventh edition, comprises in-depth articles from McAfee Labs researchers and security thought leaders. It examines the future of information security as it pertains to interconnected technologies, recent acts of cyberespionage, the rise in hacktivism, and increasingly sophisticated malware such as Stuxnet and Duqu.

“As security experts, we need to be leaders in understanding what the next-generation threats are,” said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs. “Technologies are more interconnected than ever before, and that has led to new types of security threats and data and privacy concerns. As new platforms gain traction and visibility at the attacker level, now is the time to examine these threats and inform organizations and individuals on how they can protect themselves.”

This edition of the Journal, “Security beyond the Desktop,” is based on articles compiled by international experts who issue an urgent “call to arms” to the security industry. No longer is a defensive posture sufficient to protect the ubiquitous devices and data of today’s digital world. Instead of defensive methods being installed on computers, in networks, and in the cloud, there is an urgent need to “step back,” to take a broader look at security, and to take preemptive measures. The report’s authors say now is the time to avoid enemy attacks altogether by taking a more inclusive stance, looking both inside and outside the network.

The report details the following highlights on the evolution of cyberthreats and the need for a more inclusive security strategy:

· The human link: There is an ever-widening disparity between the sophistication of a network and the people who use them. Cybercriminals often use social engineering toolkits to exploit unsuspecting employees when direct attacks on an organization’s defenses fail. Educating employees on secure practices is not enough; organizations need to install the proper framework to empower and encourage employees to use these secure practices.

· Mobile is everywhere: Mobile attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated every year. Instead of rendering the device unusable, hackers are now finding ways to steal sensitive personal data to exploit. Additionally, hackers are broadening their target range to include other, more uncommon mobile systems, such as the GPS system in a car.

· Cloud-based apps are on the rise: The popularity of cloud-based applications has made them an attractive target for hackers and other cybercriminals. However, the cloud is also a highly efficient way to scale security and protection for a business. Leveraged correctly, the cloud both helps reduce your security costs and can actually increase your overall security posture and protection.

· Data is king: Whether stored on a smartphone, in the cloud, or on a network, data is what cybercriminals
seek. Taking the proper precautions to secure this often ubiquitous data is a crucial step for many organizations.

· Learn from previous mistakes: History is a great teacher for those who take the time to study it. Analytics help identify patterns, vulnerabilities, and even motives. Understanding any of these concepts can help prevent attacks in the future.

Experts in the report are McAfee Labs researchers, as well as Chris Roberts, founder and Chief Geek of One World Labs, Jayson Street, author of Dissecting the Hack, and David Kennedy, creator of The Social Engineering Toolkit. All these experts agree that the recommendations laid out in the report are preliminary, and these are just the first steps that need to be taken industry wide.

Samsung Announces Samsung Innovation Awards 2011 Winners

Digital technology leader, Samsung Electronics has announced the winners for the prestigious ‘Samsung Innovation Awards’, instituted by the Company at the IIT, Delhi this year in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT). Instituted with the objective of recognizing the spirit of innovation amongst the IIT students, the Samsung Innovation Awards sought student innovations in the areas of product design, user interface and research. Speaking at the Felicitation Ceremony, Mr. JungSoo Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia said, “We are very encouraged by the response we have received for the first ever Samsung Innovation Awards. Through the Samsung Innovation Awards, we are seeking to foster a culture of innovation and encourage young minds to think differently so that we can get more innovative and relevant solutions for products. We hope through this partnership, we will get innovative ideas that can be further supported and incubated at the Samsung R&D Center.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anil Wali, Managing Director, FITT said, “We strongly welcome and encourage initiatives like the Samsung Innovation Awards that provide a platform to our students to get recognition for their creativity and at the same time lead to meaningful contributions to different aspects of products. We believe such initiatives will serve to further strengthen industry academia partnership and contribute towards making India a stronger innovation led economy.”

The first ever Samsung Innovation Awards recognized projects on the basis of criteria like the degree of innovation, feasibility, usability, relevance, time to market and the overall impact amongst others identified by the jury comprising of senior members from IIT, Delhi and Samsung R&D. The winners for the Samsung Innovation Awards in the area of Product Design were Prabal Goyal and Saurabh Sanyal for their Refreshable Braille Display; Jaunani.S for his idea to enhance the interaction of the mobiles with users to induce more humor into our lives. Ankit Kansal, Parag Jain and Sanjay Dhakar received the Award in the Research Category for their project on ‘Augmenting 3D Video Stabilization with Intertial Sensors’. The trophies were presented to the winners by Mr. JS Shin and Dr. Anil Wali, Managing Director, Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT).

The projects that are the best within their respective categories for the 2011 Samsung Innovation Awards are:

Product Category: ‘Refreshable Braille Display’

A prototype of a Refreshable Braille Display has been developed using 5X5 array of electro-magnetic actuators that takes up input image, processes it and produces tactile output. In the prototype, low-cost electromagnetic actuators have been used which makes it simple and easy to develop upon. It will enable the visually challenged to realize the characters, geometries and process the digital information that is presented on the computer screen. The concept can be extended to larger grid sizes which can be used for full page displays.

As large proportion of the visually challenged population of the world lives in the developing and the less developed countries, the Refreshable Braille Display will be a low-cost product developed will appeal to the masses. A simple product, like low-cost Refreshable Braille Display, can not only add talent to these nations but also bolster their economy.

Mobile Interface Category: ab3 eyes - A design to enhance interaction of the mobiles adding more humor into our lives

Before machine era, human interacted with their tools of work, namely animals like bullocks, horses by ‘sensing’ them, machines later involved only intellect. Can we make the human life full of sensing again, instead of mere cogitating and acting? The way to achieve this would be to sense these emotions by facial recognition applications and see the state of the mobile communication display a suitable, sensitive and interactive response through characters. The character could be as simple as a pair of eyes, over a period of time the users starts seeing the ‘mobile eyes’ as true eyes of a living mobile and the interaction would become richer and more rewarding for the user. It is intelligent to evolve and familiarise with the user’s usual responses. They can indicate the caller’s state of mind, infer sociability by knowing the emotional states of other people, and also personalise your entertainment experience.

Research Category- Augmenting 3D video Stabilization with inertial sensors

Casual videos taken with hand-held devices always seem shaky due to user motion. In a professional production environment, cameras are moved along smooth, straight paths with sophisticated equipment mounted on rails or steadicams. Such facilities are too cumbersome or expensive for amateurs. As such, one of the challenging tasks in Computer Vision today is compensating for camera motions. Existing stabilization algorithms operate in two dimensions and do not use camera trajectory information or scene depth. They are successful in removing only small jitters, but fail to synthesize idealized camera paths. We demonstrate a totally new approach of integrating inertial sensors with the imaging system to capture actual camera path, and then use it to transform hand-held videos to have the appearance of an idealized camera motion such as a tracking shot. Using low-cost MEMS sensors readily available in smartphones, we also propose how to implement our algorithms in real time.

The Samsung Innovation Awards is part of the company’s CSR initiative - Samsung Hope Project which is committed to the cause of the Indian community through projects in the areas of education, culture and social welfare. Dedicated to the cause of innovation and education, Samsung through its Hope Project has continuously supported and encouraged young talent / professionals who have incorporated innovative approaches, sought to improvise different systems and processes, developed indigenous products and services for fulfilling mass needs thereby transforming lives and creating sustainable solutions for the benefit of the society at large.

MCAFEE RELEASES TOP FIVE TIPS TO AVOID BAD APPS

In response to the increasing interest in mobile applications, McAfee is sharing its top five tips to avoid downloading bad apps. While reported mobile malware incidents are still relatively low in number, McAfee Labs is seeing significant growth in the mobile malware threat landscape. Due to the fact that smartphones and tablets have eclipsed unit sales of desktop and laptop PCs, cybercriminals have set their sights on mobile and maliciously modified apps are becoming a more popular vector for infecting devices. Fortunately, there are some common sense practices that anyone can take to help protect their smartphones and tablets from the growing threat of malware and the persistent threat of unsecured devices.

Here are five easy steps device users can take to secure their own devices.

For the moment, the amount of detected smartphone malware is relatively low compared to malware that targets desktop or laptop PCs; but being aware that it exists is the first step toward protecting yourself and your data.

• Research apps and their publishers thoroughly and check the ratings - better to install apps that are broadly used in the market or are recommended by your circle of friends and colleagues

• It is wise to purchase from a well-known reputable app store market, such as the Android Market. One way for Android users to avoid installation of non-market applications is to de-select the "Unknown sources" option in the Applications Settings menu on their device. If the option is not listed, it means your mobile service provider has already done this for the user.

• When you install an app, you'll see a list of permissions for services that are granted access to the hardware and software components on your device, like contacts, camera and location. If something in the permissions screen doesn't look right, don't install that app! For example, a game or alarm clock app probably shouldn't need to access your contacts or have the ability to transmit that data from your device.

• Install antivirus software on your phone. It is a good idea to install an antivirus program when you get a new mobile device before you add any other apps.

According to the Gartner report, “Forecast: Mobile Application Stores, Worldwide, 2008-2015,” May 18, 2011 (G00212661), 17.7 billion mobile apps are estimated to be downloaded in 2011 (a 115% increase from 2010). By 2012, mobile apps are projected to generate more than $15 billion in app store revenues from end-users alone.

“As the application market continues to boom, users should be more cautious that they know what they’re installing,” said Lawrence Pingree, Gartner analyst. “For example, they should only install applications from trusted sources and ensure that permissions match up with the respective application’s core features. Anti-malware protection will also go a long way in helping to ensure the user’s mobile device has the latest protection.”

“Maliciously modified apps have started to become more prevalent,” said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president, McAfee Labs. “Based on McAfee detections, we’ve seen approximately 200 malicious apps versus tens of thousands of good apps. However, with mobile devices becoming a targeted platform for malware, it’s becoming more common for cybercriminals to attempt to corrupt a legitimate app. The best advice for users is to be careful, protect the mobile device and the mobile apps that reside on the device.”

McAfee Mobile Security combines powerful anti-malware, anti-theft and web safety features and is available for Android smartphones and tablets as well as BlackBerry and Symbian smartphones. McAfee has also recently released McAfee® App Alert™ software, an app that secures and preserves the user’s privacy by providing intelligence about the apps on their Android device. The software individually analyzes and grades each app, to show the device owner how they access, store and transmit their personal data. McAfee App Alert (beta) is currently available at no cost on the Android Market.
