Apollo Hospitals announces the launch of B.P. Clinics
Apollo Hospitals Group announced the launch of ‘B.P. Clinics’ – a one of its kind and first comprehensive institutional set-up in India to provide expert care to individuals affected by high blood pressure. Ms Sangita Reddy, Executive Director, Apollo Hospitals Group; Dr K. Hari Prasad, CEO – Central Region, Apollo Hospitals Group; Padma Shri Dr C. Venkata S. Ram, Renowned B.P. Specialist; Dr Mohamed Raffey, B.P. Specialist and Dr Lt Gen Mandeep Singh, Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, announced the launch at a Press Conference on Sunday.
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor for considerable disease, disability, and premature death amongst Indians. It is very prevalent in our society. Approximately 25% of adults in the urban areas and 15% of adults in the rural areas have hypertension. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, it is estimated that 80-90 million adults in India have chronic hypertension. This is an extremely dangerous trend and has to be curtailed by early diagnosis and aggressive management. The Apollo group is launching BP Clinics for early diagnosis, screening, and treatment of hypertension.
Apollo Hospitals has always strived to identify the Indian healthcare requirements and create effective solutions. B.P. Clinics is an initiative aimed at combating the menace of High B.P., in the country with a focus on reducing or delaying incidence of blood pressure and minimize the incidence of complications in those who are already Hypertensive, says Ms Sangita Reddy. Hypertension afflicts much larger population than diabetes, its implications are very serious and therefore deserves a concerted effort to manage, she adds.
According to Ms Sangita Reddy, the principal mission of the Apollo BP Clinics is to reduce the disease burden on our society – by detecting hypertension early and by recommending proper treatment options for the patients. Our goal is to achieve normal BP in every patient diagnosed as hypertensive. We have a team of experts specialising in high BP treatment whose sole focus is dedicated to hypertension management. Our experts are known all over the world for their work and specialization in hypertension.
Ms Reddy said, Apollo B.P. Clinics will have a structure comprising of Advanced B.P. Clinics located at our hospitals and serve as hubs and a series of B.P. Clinics, Express B.P. Clinics and Home care services, to reach out to the community at large. Initially we will be launching these Clinics at Apollo Jubilee Hills & Hyderguda, followed by Apollo Secunderabad, and expand it to other places. Around Rs 10 crores will be invested in setting up these clinics in the initial phase, we will expand further after reviewing the outcomes, she said. Apollo B.P. Clinics will have advanced diagnostic infrastructure like Periscopes, which can monitor central blood pressure - the more accurate and precise way of monitoring B.P. and checks elasticity of blood vessels and devices for 24 hours B.P. monitoring. We will create standardized guidelines and protocols for these clinics, she added.
Apollo BP clinics provide a comprehensive programme for proper diagnosis and treatment of blood pressure problems in the community. The Clinics will accomplish
· Accurate measurement of BP by trained personnel
· 24 hour ambulatory BP measurement
· Checking the health of blood vessels (elasticity, stiffness etc.,)
· Investigations for BP
· Special and advanced testing for patients with complex, difficult–to-treat and resistant hypertension
The Apollo BP Clinics programme is one of its kind and the first comprehensive institutional set-up in India to provide expert care to individuals affected by high blood pressure, says, Dr Hari Prasad.
Most patients with hypertension do not have any cause (primary or essential hypertension). Some may have a reason to develop high BP (Secondary hypertension) which requires special investigations and “work-up.” Hypertension generally causes no symptoms, hence is called a “silent killer”. The only way to know if you have hypertension is by checking the blood pressure.
Padmashri Dr Venkata S. Ram pointed out the alarming statistics related to B.P. management in the country, he says only 50% of the patients with hypertension are aware that they have high B.P.; among them only 50% are on treatment and only 50% of these have B.P. under control. Hypertension is the cause for most serious ailments like Heart disease, Stroke/Paralysis, Kidney failure, Dementia etc., and needs comprehensive and sustained personalized management, he adds. Around 80 to 90 million people in our country suffer from hypertension, approximately $ 24 billion is incurred annually to take care of high B.P. patients in India and is a huge burden on our economy, as it afflicts people in their prime age. It is estimated that around 1 in every 3 urbanites and 1 in 4 ruralites are afflicted of hypertension in our country. He said, people monitoring their B.P. at home is acceptable and important, would have been skeptical about such readings in the past but not anymore as most B.P. devices available in the market today are standardized, accurate and reliable in their reading.
Simple lifestyle changes like reducing salt consumption, body weight, alcohol consumption and enhancing physical activity can make huge difference in B.P. management, says Dr Mohamed Raffey. According to him, the incidence of high B.P. in children is rising and is a cause for grave concern; such children may not reach old age at all. High B.P. in children was unknown twenty years ago, he pointed.

Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad performs hip replacement on a 103 year old patient
Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad performed a hip replacement on an advanced aged patient of 103 years, from Zaheerabad. This rare surgery was performed by Dr. Mithin Aachi, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad and his team on August 26th, 2013, the patient has since recovered fully and is mobile.
The relatives of this elderly patient brought him with a complaint of severe pain and swelling after an accidental fall. On investigation it was found that the patient’s hip has fractured and a prosthesis implanted during a Hemiarthroplasty – a one side hip replacement, he had undergone elsewhere 20 years ago, had become loose.
The case presented a great challenge for the team considering the patient’s advance age and associated problem of hypertension. To minimize the side effects of anaesthesia and reduce post operative pain, spinal epidural anaesthesia was opted for. His bones were found to be brittle and poor in strength, as is expected in a patient of his age, and were augmented with wires. The surgery itself took about an hour. The patient was fine during the surgery and did not show any complications post operation.
According to Dr. Mithin Aachi, There were not many precedents in the world for us to fall back and prepare to perform this high risk surgery, but the trauma of the patient and the desire of his relatives to see him well made us choose the most optimal option to perform the surgery and are extremely delighted with the outcome.
The usual life span of our hips is lifelong, unless it gets spoiled because of certain diseases, drugs like steroids and alcohol, adds Dr. Aachi.

She underwent treatment for rheumatic arthritis which has reduced by over 80%. Once the rheumatic arthritis had stabilised the consulting team decided to operate on the joint and replace it.
“We are delighted that we were able to successfully operate on the joint and restore full movement. We are confident that Lata will soon be able to return to her normal routine and enjoy them. Over the next six weeks she will undergo physiotherapy sessions and light exercises to regain complete movement,” said Dr. Manish Samson. “Elbow replacement surgeries are very rare as they are not a weight bearing joints and people tend to put off the surgery. In total elbow replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the humerus and ulna are replaced with artificial components. The artificial elbow joint is made up of a metal and plastic hinge with two metal stems. The stems fit inside the hollow part of the bone called the canal,” he added.
The most common joint replacement surgeries are associated with the knee followed by hip and then the elbow and ankle replacements.

American Megatrends India Successfully Deploys Feedback Management System (FMS) at Apollo Hospitals
American Megatrends India, a high-end technology player focused on computing innovations, and a wholly owned subsidiary of American Megatrends Inc., USA (AMI USA),has successfully deployed its Feedback Management System (FMS) at all Apollo hospitals in Chennai and in select Apollo hospitals in Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Ahmedabad. With FMS - a customer experience measurement tool, Apollo has gone paperless to quickly and effectively resolve customer problems and ensure excellence in its customer service management.
Apollo Hospitals Group, an integrated healthcare organization with owned and managed hospitals, diagnostic clinics, dispensing pharmacies and consultancy services, has had a conventional way of getting customer feedback. Apollo’s service excellence team would collect customer feedback in a printed form with many questions. All the data collected would be captured and saved in an excel sheet. This process did not address department-specific or doctor-specific issues.
Understanding the limitations of its existing customer feedback system, Apollo recently partnered with American Megatrends India to go paperless and make efficient use of its manpower. American Megatrends India’s FMS comes with a simple and appealing iPhone/Android application. The feedback collected from inpatient, outpatient, attendees, doctors and other hospital staff on FMS is strategically evaluated. American Megatrends India has customised the FMS solution for Apollo and integrated it with its AIMS (American Megatrends Infrastructure Management Suite) solution that allows the feedback to get escalated to respective departments. The web application of FMS provides dashboards and reports of the collected feedback.
Mr. Arvind Sivaramakrishnan, Chief Information Officer, Apollo Hospitals, added, “The opinion and feedback of customers are invaluable to us. We needed a solution that could capture and strategically analyze the collected feedback. We are glad to have partnered with American Megatrends India. The company’s Feedback Management System has provided a smart and user-friendly solution which has not only helped us in capturing customers’ feedback, but also in effectively engaging with them. Post FMS deployment at all our hospitals in Chennai and in select hospitals in Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Ahmedabad, we now plan to implement FMS at our other hospitals in India.” The initiative will now be replicated to other Hospitals of the Group.”
Commenting on the successful deployment of this project,Mr. Sridharan Mani, Director & CEO, American Megatrends India, said,“It is a huge honour to get this project from Apollo. This project bears testimony to Apollo’s endeavors to continually better its customer experience management. This project has set a new benchmark for the customer service excellence in hospitals, in India. We look forward to extending this solution to players in the hotel, airline and retail space.”
American Megatrends will be showcasing the Feedback Management System in the 4th International Conference on Transforming Healthcare with IT that will take place in September 6thand 7th in Hyderabad, India.

Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad completes 25 years of service
Apollo Hospitals, the first super-specialty hospital in Andhra Pradesh and the first functional Health City in Asia has completed 25 years in service of the community. Launched on 27 August, 1988 as a 150 bedded hospital on a hillock in the then outskirts of Hyderabad, Apollo Hospitals has evolved into a global healthcare destination. Apart from serving the healthcare needs in the Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and India, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad today serves patients from over 50 countries.
Multiple important milestones have been a part of this journey and each one of these milestones has provided us the energy and motivation to move to the next one. This institution was the first hospital in Andhra Pradesh (the only hospital in Andhra Pradesh to date) to be accredited by the Joint Commission International, USA and was also the first hospital in the world to be certified for management of stroke. Ever since the Week Magazine instituted the ‘Best Hospital’ Survey, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad has been at the top of the list. Awards from Hospital Management, Asia, FICCI Healthcare Awards, Avaya Global Connect Awards, G20 Award, Super brand and a variety of others have made us proud, but the biggest award we have received is the trust of our patients, the medical fraternity and the community which has translated into our being the hospital of choice.
Technological supremacy, continuous skill enhancement and an environment of innovation coupled with our patient centric approach have been critical to the success of Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. Speaking on the occasion, Mrs.Sangita Reddy, Executive Director, Apollo Group of Hospitals said, “While we are extremely happy with our journey in the last 25 years, we believe that there is a lot more to be done. While celebrating the success of the last 25 years, we are recommitting ourselves to the challenges of the next 25 years“.
Some of the highlights of Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad include:
