India's PC Market declined 20.6 Percent In the First Quarter Of 2014, says Gartner

The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totaled nearly 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2014, a 20.6 percent decrease over the first quarter of 2013, according to Gartner, Inc.

“Consumers accounted for 47 percent of total PC sales in the first quarter of 2014,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner. ”In the absence of any government orders this quarter, the Indian PC market performed dismally, re-emphasizing the fact that sentiments were not very positive in the first quarter of 2014, and enterprises are deferring their purchases. However, with new government leadership, there is a positive sentiment both among and enterprises and consumers, and we expect markets to bounce back in the next two quarters.”

White boxes (including parallel imports), which accounted for 39 percent of the overall desktop market, declined 7 percent in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter, mobile PCs declined 32 percent year-on-year due to a lack of government sales.

Dell increased its market share in 1Q14  due to strong growth in notebooks which increased 43 percent year-over-year. This growth primarily came from the consumer segment where Dell grew by 44 percent.

Top Vendors in the India PC Market are Dell(23%), HP(20%), Lenovo(13.8), ACER(10.7), Others(32%) for the  First Quarter of 2014.

#HP unveiled new enterprise-class storage disk array

HP unveiled new enterprise-class storage disk array
HP today unveiled an enterprise-class storage disk array that provides customers with lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for traditional storage workloads in mission-critical environments.

Large enterprises rely on mission-critical applications to drive their businesses, which means that applications and data must remain available at all times, without exception. To ensure business continuity, enterprises require storage solutions that are designed to maintain high levels of data availability and continuous disaster recovery protection. To drive greater enterprise efficiency, storage systems that serve these mission-critical environments must also drive greater storage consolidation, deliver extremely high performance levels and offer the lowest possible TCO without compromising data availability or data protection.

HP XP7 Storage offers a combination of six 9s—or 99.9999 percent—uptime, which translates to less than 31.5 seconds of application downtime per year, as well as always-on disaster recovery protection, increased system density and ultra-high, flash-driven performance. Capable of delivering 3 million IOPS (I/O per second) with submillisecond response times, HP XP7 Storage is the highest performing, full-featured, enterprise-class disk array, delivering three times the performance of the previous generation of XP Storage.(1)

Most productive traditional enterprise array(1)
The HP XP7’s next-generation hardware provides the ability to increase system density, reduce power consumption and achieve low-cost performance, with the latest in-host connectivity options and the broadest flash and spinning media choices on the market. These media choices include XP Flash Modules and solid-state drives as well as small and large form factor hard disk drives.

With consolidation of up to 4.5 PB of internal storage onto a single array, one HP XP7 Storage system is capable of delivering more IOPS than three EMC Symmetrix VMAX 40K storage arrays combined.(2) Consolidating multiple EMC disk arrays onto a single HP XP7 Storage system reduces data center floor space requirements by a total of 130 square feet and storage-related costs by more than US$100,000 per year.(2)

Advanced, always-on disaster recovery
With the most critical data residing on enterprise-class storage platforms, organizations must keep data protected and recoverable at all times. HP XP7 Storage features a new disaster recovery capability with multiarray virtualization to prevent business disruption without measurable performance impacts during online data migrations. Data remains protected using the customer’s local or remote strategy with 100 percent uptime.

“Today’s mission-critical workloads cannot afford to forfeit performance or scalability for increased disaster recovery and data protection,” said Barun Lala, director, Storage, HP India. “With the introduction of HP XP7 Storage, we are supplying customers with a single system that is highly efficient, with features that can reduce the risk of data loss and provide nonstop data availability.”

Reduced data and business risk
HP XP7 Storage features, including new user authentication and access control functions, increase administrative and resource segregation enabling customers to manage more data more securely. This is particularly important for large enterprise environments where a single system may be used to drive multiple lines of business, serve thousands of internal and external customers, and be managed by several administrators.

To address these requirements, HP XP7 Storage secures data with Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 encryption readiness.

Protection for storage investments
Thorough testing and end-to-end solution certification ensures customers that their HP XP solutions will work as anticipated in their actual environments. HP Technology Services provides worldwide installation, support and maintenance for the product.

In addition, HP Enterprise Services has integrated the product into HP Storage Management Services, which offers world-class management services providing a selection of storage tiers for all business application needs.

HP is the only major storage vendor that offers proven enterprise-class systems for mission-critical enterprise applications with HP XP Storage, as well as purpose-built tier-1 solutions designed for unpredictable workloads such as virtualization and cloud computing with HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage.(1) This choice of high-end offerings guarantees that wherever customers are in their transition to a new style of IT they have a risk-free path to support their journey.

Pricing and Availability(3)
HP XP7 Storage will be available in May 2014, starting at US$462,000.

Extending its leadership in enterprise security, HP is unveiling new solutions and services that enable organizations to proactively share threat intelligence and openly collaborate as an industry to combat the growing ecosystem of adversaries.

According to a recent survey of 234 organizations conducted by the Ponemon Institute, the number of security breaches increased 20 percent and the cost of individual breaches increased 30 percent over last year.(1) These trends indicate that cybercriminals are working harder and smarter to gain access to sensitive data and inflict damage on corporate reputations.

With organizations in Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) experiencing cyber-crimes caused by malicious insiders, denial of service and web-based attacks that they are unable to stop due to outdated or insufficient threat intelligence, enterprises need to strengthen their security posture to defend their organizations.

“Advanced attack techniques and collaboration in the criminal market place is fuelling an increased rate of costly security breaches in APJ,” said Jyoti Prakash, country director - HP ESP (India & SAARC countries) “Crowd-sourced threat intelligence from our vast community of customers, partners and researchers is essential in this battle against cybercrime. By sharing actionable intelligence through our solutions, expertise and best practices, organizations can more effectively address the new threat environment.”

Intelligence sharing and collaboration are key
Security organizations must mirror the adversary’s approach, and share intelligence to formulate the most current and complete picture of      emerging threats.
HP’s new offerings bring together solutions and services to help the industry share intelligence and build a united defense against adversaries.

HP Threat Central, developed with HP Labs, provides a collaborative security intelligence platform that enables community members to share threat data and analysis, providing real-time intelligence on adversaries, attack vectors, methods and motivations behind current threats.

The platform is now strengthened with the introduction of the HP Threat Central Partner Network, a collaboration of security vendors sharing threat intelligence across the industry to combat adversaries. HP is initially working with partners including Arbor Networks, Blue Coat Systems, InQuest, ThreatGRID, TrendMicro and Wapack Labs, to deliver strategic threat intelligence and actionable indicators to the HP Threat Central community.

In addition to intelligence shared by community members and partners, HP Security Research and HP Enterprise Security Services will contribute intelligence feeds to the HP Threat Central platform. The platform also will power the HP ArcSight and HP TippingPoint portfolios, providing seamless integration for automated threat download and upload from HP ArcSight Enterprise Security Management (ESM) and automated action (blocking) of malicious IP addresses in the HP TippingPoint Next Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) and HP TippingPoint Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) devices.

HP Targeted Threat Intelligence, enhanced by HP Threat Central, collects, collates and analyzes structured and unstructured data from social media, hacker forums and other traditional log data sources to provide organizations a more holistic view of the threat landscape.

“Chief information security officers (CISOs) and other senior-level security professionals must be able to plan not only for threats that exist now, but also for those that may emerge in as much as three years' time or beyond,” wrote Rob McMillian, research director, and Kelly Kavanagh, principal research analyst, Gartner.  They go on to write, “Assessing current and potential future threats requires advanced threat intelligence that most organizations are not capable of developing cost-effectively in-house.”(2)

Banding together across the industry
To strengthen defenses across the threat landscape, HP is partnering with other vendors and introducing new offerings that expand access to security technology integrations, address open source vulnerabilities and support the use of standards-based solutions.

• Enabling integration with leading security companies to provide an advanced layer of protection, HP introduces the HP TippingPoint Advanced Threat application programming interface (API). HP Drives Rapid Virtualization Return on Investment for Small and Midsize Businesses
HP today announced HP StoreVirtual 4335 Storage, a new software-defined storage system for Small and Midsize Businesses (SMBs) to enable high virtualized application performance while reducing costs by dynamically moving data between solid state and traditional disk drives.

HP StoreVirtual 4335 Storage is a hybrid storage system which offers a unique Adaptive Optimization feature that automates the intelligent movement of frequently accessed data from hard disk drives (HDDs) to high-performance solid state drives (SSDs). This auto-tiering capability accelerates application performance compared to HDDs,(1) and delivers 59 percent lower cost than using SSDs alone.(2) As a result, SMB customers spend less on storage while supporting more virtual machines.

“Workloads in virtual server environments can be unpredictable and are heavily dependent on the underlying storage for performance. This creates challenges in meeting service levels—particularly for companies looking to virtualize more of their applications, implementing desktop virtualization, or simply experiencing rapid virtualized application growth,” said Barun Lala, director, Storage, HP India. “The StoreVirtual 4335 gives our SMB customers a way to break through their performance challenge and drive greater server virtualization performance at lower costs.”

Balancing performance and cost to make the most out of SSD capacity
Solid state and flash media allow customers to achieve performance levels that eliminate the roadblocks to virtualization performance. However, affordability has traditionally limited SMB adoption of SSD technology.

HP StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Storage is a purpose-built system designed to accelerate workloads affordably. The Adaptive Optimization feature in the StoreVirtual 4335 is an auto-tiering capability that provides cost effective use of valuable SSD capacity. HP StoreVirtual Adaptive Optimization transparently monitors data access patterns at 256KB granularity and then moves only the data that has high access patterns to SSD storage. In this way SSD capacity can be utilized efficiently, allowing SMB customers to get the benefits of server virtualization performance acceleration without a high price tag.

HP StoreVirtual Adaptive Optimization software maintains nearly 100 percent utilization of SSDs, making it ideal for businesses that need affordable, high-performance storage.  It also increases SSD efficiency by allocating top tier capacity for business critical application data and storing replicated (RAID 10, RAID 10+1) or parity data (RAID 5 and 6) on more economical SAS disks.

Software-defined storage leadership from pure software to turnkey systems
All HP StoreVirtual solutions utilize a common operating system across appliance offerings as well as virtual storage appliance offerings. The HP StoreVirtual feature set delivers the benefits of advanced data services like adaptive optimization, multi-site high availability and thin provisioning for one low, all-inclusive price.

The StoreVirtual 4335 with Adaptive Optimization is the latest addition to HP’s leading software-defined storage portfolio, based on version 11.0 of the highly portable HP LeftHand Operating System (OS). HP StoreVirtual Storage offers customers a choice of HP ProLiant rack- and blade-based hardware models, or a wide range of StoreVirtual Virtual Storage Appliances (VSAs) including a free 1TB StoreVirtual VSA which HP includes  with the purchase of eligible HP ProLiant Generation 8 (Gen8) servers.

The scale-out nature of the solution means customers can achieve near linear improvements in performance each time a system is added. This enables SMB customers to meet rapidly changing performance and capacity requirements by growing flexibly and non-disruptively from a low or no-cost VSA which runs on any x86 server to a clustered configuration of multiple StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Arrays that delivers resilient shared storage capable of faster processing. In addition, customers can easily add storage tiers or configure disaster recovery between physical and virtual storage appliances.

The latest version of the HP LeftHand OS also includes integration with Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager via SMI-S and VMware vCenter Server™ via the HP Insight Control plug-in. These integrations enable storage provisioning at the same time virtual machines are defined to streamline workflow and speed deployment.

HP Converged Storage Innovations Improve Business Continuity and Accelerate Applications

HP Converged Storage Innovations Improve Business Continuity and Accelerate Applications
HP today announced Converged Storage innovations that restore business productivity at record speed, reduce All Flash Array costs significantly while increasing performance and Quality-of-Service (QoS) capabilities, and expand agility by enabling cloud storage application mobility.

Organizations jeopardize revenue and IT initiatives by protecting data with outdated backup systems that lack high availability and provide limited recovery time objectives (RTO). In addition, these organizations are unable to accelerate application performance to the degree necessary due to the high cost of flash. They have also stalled on their virtualization journey because unpredictable performance and the I/O Blender effect have them unwilling to virtualize their more critical applications. Further, their efforts to cost-effectively develop in the cloud and deploy locally requires application changes impacting time to market.

Additions to the HP Converged Storage portfolio introduced today include the next generation of HP StoreOnce Backup and HP StoreAll Archive systems with industry-leading performance to reduce risk as well as enhancements to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage with cost-reduced flash technology, performance improvements and software QoS enhancements to meet the needs of IT as a Service environments.

Industry-leading backup and recovery performance at greater scale

With downtime costing organizations thousands of dollars per hour in lost revenue, it is imperative that data is protected and able to be recovered quickly. The latest generation of HP StoreOnce Backup systems enables customers to more efficiently manage growth by protecting more data in less time. Customer benefits include:
·    Reduced business risk and workflow disruption with a completely refreshed HP StoreOnce backup portfolio, which on the high end at 1.7 petabytes delivers more than four times the backup performance and 10 times faster recovery speed than its closest competitor.(1)

·    Enhanced security via StoreOnce Security Pack, which enables customers to encrypt individual applications on all StoreOnce Backup systems, restore encrypted data and assure secure deletion of information.

·    Application-managed backup with HP StoreOnce Catalyst support for Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) as well as Bridgehead Software.

·    Minimized risk when switching from a competing system to HP StoreOnce Backup through the HP StoreOnce Get Protected Guarantee Program, assuring customers a 95-percent reduction in stored backup capacity consumption.(2)

Changing the economics and service level capability of flash storage

Outdated storage architectures are unable to maximize flash storage performance and efficiency while immature first-generation flash appliances lack robust tier-1 data service required for enterprise datacenters.

New HP 3PAR StoreServ enhancements provide the following customer benefits:
·    Up to 50 percent lower cost(3) and reduced data center footprint with new 480GB and higher-capacity 920GB solid state disks (SSDs). These drives deliver more capacity at enterprise endurance levels leveraging 3PAR Adaptive Sparing—an HP 3PAR flash innovation that provides the ability to optimize flash overprovisioning by reducing capacity needed for meeting enterprise endurance levels.

·    Improved transaction performance at more than 900,000 IOPS at less than 700 microseconds latency.(4) Average 25 percent reduction in overall latency and 230 percent increase in maximum capacity for the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 All Flash Array, growing maximum capacity from 96 TB to 220 TB.(5)

·    Assurance of predictable and consistent service levels by providing storage controls that allow applications to get the right level of performance utilizing new capabilities with HP 3PAR Priority Optimization. Customers can now set minimum and maximum thresholds with IOPS, bandwidth and latency controls by application or tenant.

Cloud storage application portability, search enhancements for big data archives

With the volume of managed data set to increase by 50 times this decade,(6) organizations are struggling to efficiently retain and manage information long-term much less move to new object storage paradigms. To help simplify management of big data archives and enable next generation cloud storage applications, HP StoreAll Archive systems now:
·    Increase business agility with native OpenStack Object Storage and Identity Service integration to enable cloud storage applications to be developed in the public cloud then moved in-house to enhance security and control.

·    Accelerate and simplify business insight with HP Express Query enhancements that extend near-instant search across billions of files with reporting tools and support for multi-attribute queries.

·    Minimize storage costs with the new HP StoreAll Storage systems, with extremely high density at 1.5 PB per rack and a total of 16 PB to support massive scale while reducing datacenter footprint.

·    Provide investment protection with the ability to expand existing clusters with next-generation HP StoreAll systems for customers that are storing petabytes of data for long-term access.

Maximizing information value and reducing risk requires a New Style of IT that also reduces bottom-line costs. HP Converged Storage eliminates complexity of disparate point solutions with a single architecture that spans backup and archive, as well as a single primary storage design for midrange, enterprise, and all-flash arrays. It’s the simplest and fastest way to modernize storage infrastructure, removing cost barriers to replacing complex, diverged legacy systems.
