Next Generation of Innovators honoured at the Intel India Embedded Challenge 2012
Joseph Jeffrey, Roshan G Patil and Skanda Kumar K N  from International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIIT-B) and Siddartha Khastgir and AnubhaV Sahoo from Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-K) have won the coveted Intel India Embedded Challenge grand prize for 2012 for their projects ‘Wireless Sensor based Smart Parking System’ and ‘Development of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Coastal Monitoring Applications’  respectively for the embedded intelligent systems theme. The nationwide competition is an initiative by Intel India to recognize and reward outstanding ideas in embedded technology, based on the Intel® Atom™ processor.
Prof. S Sadagopan, Director, International Institute of Information Technology - Bangalore and Professor H.P. Khincha, Chairman, Karnataka Innovation Council were present at the occasion to felicitate the winners of Intel India Embedded Challenge (Intel IEC) 2012. Intel® Higher Education Program team works with reputed engineering institutions across India to promote the quality of technical education and research in academia. Intel India Embedded Challenge is one such program hosted annually by Intel® Higher Education Program team in India to promote research and innovation among engineering students and working professionals.
 “We are pleased to receive overwhelming response to the Intel Embedded Challenge from students and working professionals across India. This is one of Intel India’s platforms to provide engineering students and technical professionals an environment to cultivate their technological talents. Through this initiative, Intel India seeks to promote an ecosystem in which research and innovation can thrive,” said Jitendra Chaddah, Director-Strategic Development and Operations, Intel India.
This year’s Intel India Embedded Challenge had two main categories – ‘Embedded Intelligent Systems’ and ‘Embedded Solutions for Social Cause’. For Embedded Intelligent Systems, entries were submitted under five themes: Information Technology applications, Consumer Solutions, Telecommunications, Industrial Electronics, Automotive electronics and Military & Aero space Engineering. For Embedded Solutions for Social Cause, entries were submitted under four themes: Technology Enabled Agricultural Applications, e-governance, Citizen Services, and Rural IT / Connectivity, Bio Medical and Health Care and Education.
             In addition to the grand prizes, awards were given for embedded innovation of the year, popular choice award and Special Mention award of the year.
Winners will also have the opportunity to participate in ‘The Next Big Idea’, a Technology Entrepreneurship, conducted by Intel India, the Department of Science and Technology and the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The new initiative aims to foster greater entrepreneurial growth across the country by acting as an incubator for outstanding ideas. The program assesses business plans and provides practical support to develop them into sustainable business models.
            
About the Contest
The Intel India Embedded Challenge 2012 contest is part of the Intel® Higher Education Program. The initiative, run in association with Intel’s Embedded Communications Group, seeks to support the exploration of innovative embedded technology applications, based on the Intel® Atom™ processor, at universities and engineering institutes.
This year, the entries – from individuals or teams of two – covered a range of applications: from socially relevant areas like education, medicine, rural development and environment, to commercially exciting areas like gaming, social networking, infotainment and robotics.
The 2012 contest over 2800 registrations and 688 innovative ideas being submitted to Intel India. Intel India short listed 120 teams based on their innovative ideas in embedded technology. A set of expert evaluators from Intel India short listed 35 top projects for the finals. In this final phase, each of the finalists worked on Intel® Atom™ Processor kits to prototype their idea. The prototypes were then showcased to a jury consisting of senior academic researchers, government representatives and industry leaders, who selected the winners.
