Dr. Narendra Saini, Secretary General, Indian Medical Association (IMA) said, “Affordable and accessible healthcare has been the need of the hour but the Government is offering it at the cost of private health sector. The situation has necessitated a common platform among healthcare providers and associations to come together to address the problems ailing health sector in India. Private sector is catering to 70% of healthcare needs and the rest is being spent by the government.” He further added, “Rampant issue of BPL cards in various states has created unjustifiable problems to hospitals to treat patients at a loss. Reimbursements to hospitals by various government schemes has caused immense financial problems and putting the survival of hospitals at risk. Capping medical negligence compensation is an immediate need. With majority of hospitals being small and with single owner, a major medical negligence claim can effectively put an end to the doctor’s career / hospital.”
Dr. Giridhar Gyani, Director General, AHPI said, “Healthcare industry is a noble profession which serves humanity but it is being accused of going commercial and exploitative. The opinion has to be encountered with delivering quality and safe healthcare for which the healthcare providers across India needs to come together. Coming together does not mean we are against government but to provide collective effort in addressing the need.” He further added, “AHPI is established with a model having national body in Delhi and with state chapters addressing local issues. We have exceeded 10,000 hospitals in Delhi/NCR, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.”
Treasurer of AHPI, Dr. Devi Shetty said, “Last few years we have witnessed hostility towards doctors. The medical malpractice compensation against Kolkata hospital and doctors for Rs. 11 crore was celebrated. It has set a precedent to all consumers’ forums to levy a minimum of Rs. 2 crore as compensation. This has effectively meant that affordable healthcare will no more be a reality. 84% of the hospitals in the country are less than 30-bed in size and 60% of the children of the country are born in these hospitals. In China Government pays for healthcare and doctors are providers. All inefficiencies of Government are passed on to doctors and as a result in last 5 years, assaults on doctors are on the rise and few doctors have died as well. India is not far away from this scenario.”
Registered under the Society Registration Act 1860 as ‘Not for profit’ organization. The association concurrently advocates with the government, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders on issues which impact and enables its member organizations in delivering Universal Health Coverage to the community at large and especially to the common man.
