Muthoot Group, in association with Save the Children, today announced that 1200 children in the age group of 5-12 years from most marginalized families were referred for enrollment in government schools through an innovative Enrollment and Retention drive in North East Delhi. The drive sensitized parents and community members on issues such as benefits of education for children, information on the nearest school, the admission procedure, and about sending children less than five years to the nearby Aanganwadi centers in order to develop school readiness skills.
In active partnership with Save the Children, the Muthoot Group runs a special program in MCD schools in North East Delhi. The aim is to improve the quality of education in primary schools managed by East Delhi Municipal Corporation and to support the National objective of universal enrollment and retention. In a survey it was observed that more than 90 per cent of the parents reached out during the enrollment drive were not aware of the existence of School Management Committees, one of the most important features of the Muthoot program.
The objective of the enrollment drive was to (1) increase entailment and retention of vulnerable children in the formal education system and putting them on map of development under the programme, (2) create awareness among local community members about children’s educational needs irrespective of gender, (3) create awareness about importance of retention of children who are already in school, (4) lay emphasis on the importance of education and ensure that every child in their community have access to formal education, (5) enroll drop-out school children (children who dropped out due to reasons like supporting their family, children facing financial constraints, children denied admission in the school etc.) back in the formal education system, (6) sensitize parents about Right to Education Act 2009 and importance of regularity in the school.
Talking about the program Mr M.G. George Muthoot, Chairman, Muthoot Group said, “At Muthoot Group, we constantly strive to create a socially responsible culture in the society that we work in. Over the years, we have been actively involved in a number of CSR initiatives in domains like education, sports, environment, sanitation, medical aid financial aid to the weaker sections of society. We are happy that our week-long enrollment drive has created the much-needed awareness among parents, communities and children on the ‘need for education’. We are aiming at improving the enrollment and retention. Currently, the total children outreach in 12 sanctioned MCD schools is 6144 (3-12 years), with 24 teachers being trained till now under ‘Muthoot Haathi Mera Saathi’ program.”
Ms. Shireen Vakil Miller, Advocacy & Policy Director for Save the Children informed: “With support from the Muthoot Group, Save the Children wanted to create awareness among community members about children's educational needs irrespective of gender and importance of education. The effort was to ensure maximum enrolment of out-of-school children who due to some reasons (for example they are employed to support their family) were either not able to go to schools or were denied admission. The drive has been a massive success. We were able to cover 70,000 households indirectly and connect with 600 families directly. A total of 1200 children were identified for enrollment and were referred to the nearest government school for this purpose. At the same time, we helped a large number of parents accelerate the process of enrollment of their children.”
