A three-day international conference on “Quality and Reliability Engineering” (ICQRE 2011) organized by Bangalore Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) began this morning at Hotel Atria, Bangalore. Prof. T.S. Arthanari, Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (Business & Economics), University of Auckland, New Zealand inaugurated the conference in the presence of several distinguished scientists from India and overseas as well as representatives from various industries. While inaugurating the conference, Prof. Arthanari focused on the role of SQC & OR division which could play towards improving quality of life in particular. He felt that it is imperative to contribute to societal quality for all citizens of India in the present day context. He also stressed the importance for the applied research to enable the industries to produce high quality products/ services at low cost making optimum uses of available resources.
Prof. A.K. Chaudhuri, Chairman of the organizing committee, spoke on the importance for holding such interactive conference so that in one hand, the industry people could understand the applied research being carried out by the scientists across the globe and on the other hand, the scientists could understand as to which problems from the industry require innovative solutions from the academics. Boby John, organizing secretary of ICQRE 2011, highlighted the objectives of the conference and felt that the conference would facilitate sharing of research based knowledge relating to quality control, quality management, process performance modeling and reliability engineering between the academicians and industry people. Somnath Ray, Head, SQC&OR Unit of the ISI, Bangalore gave the vote of thanks.
Internationally acclaimed scientists like Prof. Jeff Y. Lei (The University of Texas, Arlington), Prof. William Q. Meeker (Iowa State University, USA), Prof. Raghu Kakkar, (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA) and Prof. T.S. Arthanari, Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (Business & Economics), University of Auckland, New Zealand participated in the first day’s proceedings and delivered keynote addresses. Representatives from various industries were present on this occasion.
Several other renowned scientists and experts like Prof. Shiegeru Yamada, (Tottori University, Japan) Prof. Alex Douglas (Liverpool Business School, UK), Prof. Gopinath Chattopadhyay (CQ University, Australia), Prof. Martin Newby (City University, London), Prof. Min Xie (City University, Hong Kong), Prof. Peihua Qiu (University of Minnesota, USA) and several other eminent academicians of various research institutions from abroad and India are participating in the conference and will deliver keynote addresses in the remaining two days of the international conference.
