Monster Employment Index India Rises 9% Year-over-Year

September 2012 Index Highlights:


• Index level rises nine percent from a year ago in September

• Shipping/Marine continues to outpace all industries, while Garments/ Textiles/ Leather, Gems & Jewellery sector also records strong annual growth. Government/PSU/Defense records double digit negative decline

• Demand among occupations up most for Arts/ Creative professionals, followed by Legal

• Coimbatore registers the strongest annual growth for the sixth consecutive month. Bangalore is the strongest annual gainer among major metro-markets



The Monster Employment Index India is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career Web sites and online job listings across India. The Index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure of the change in job listings across the industry.



“The recent developments in the Monster Employment Index India reflect a relatively encouraging trend driven by growth in major sectors like IT, Retail, Healthcare, Engineering and Construction,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, Monster.com (India/ Middle- East/ South East Asia).”However, growth rate continues to remain in the single-digits indicating a continued cautious sentiment.”



Industry Year-over-year Trends: 17 of the 27 industry sectors monitored by the Monster Employment Index registered expansion in online recruitment activity between September’11 and September’12.



• Shipping/Marine (up 54 percent) exhibited the highest annual growth among sectors



• Garments/ Textiles/ Leather, Gems & Jewellery (up 32 percent), sector maintained an upward trend in online recruitment activity between September ’11 and September’12



• Government/ PSU/ Defense (down 23 percent) showed steepest annual decline



Occupation Year-over-year Trends: Online demand improved in eight of 13 occupational groups monitored by the Monster Employment Index between September’11 and September’12.



• Arts/Creative (up 23 percent) followed by Legal (up 14 percent) charted the most substantial annual gains amongst the occupational groups



• HR & Admin (down three percent) exhibited the steepest annual decline among occupation groups



Geographic year-over-year Trends: Online recruitment activity was up on the year for 12 of the 13 locations monitored by the index.



• Coimbatore (up 45 percent) followed by Kochin (up 34 percent) led all cities in annual growth



• Among major metro-areas, Bangalore (up 24 percent) registered the highest annual growth



• Ahmedabad (down eight percent) was amidst the slowest growth markets
