To share insights on the HR trends that will shape the IT-BPM industry in the coming year, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) organized the annual NASSCOM HR Summit 2013 at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai, on the 23rd and 24th of July, 2013. According to NASSCOM, skill based recruitment, need for specialist skills in emerging technologies focus on domain competencies and blended hiring models will be few trends for coming year.

The IT-BPM industry in India over the last few years has evolved considerably – focusing on technology led solutions, changed business and pricing models and reinvented internal structures. This has been driven by the changed global landscape, emergence of disruptive technologies and new customer segments.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM said, “The IT-BPM sector in India currently employs over 3 million people and will continue to be a net hirer with increased emphasis on skill based hiring. In addition, there are increased opportunities in the domestic sector, entrepreneurship that will fuel employment”.

NASSCOM IT-ITES Sector Skill Council Focus Areas

-    Occupational Standards: Define unique job roles at entry, middle and senior level
-    Faculty Development Program
-    Assessments – NAC / NACTech
-    Foundation Skills – BPM, IT Services, ER&D
Talking about prevalent trends in the industry Mr Mittal added, “Gen Y accounts for over 60 percent of the industry workforce and engaging this workforce has emerged as a key priority for the industry. Over 90 percent companies are increasingly using technology and social media to reach out to employees both current and prospective. This is enabling peer engagement and collaboration, innovation, insight-driven decision making-across geographies, time zones and employees.”

NASSCOM also shared a key achievement of the IT-ITES Sector Skill Council on developing detailed occupational standards across industry sub-sectors – IT Services, BPM, ER&D, and Software Products. These occupational standards define unique job roles in these sub-sectors at entry, middle and senior level. Detailed content and career plans for these unique job roles are being defined as next steps.

The NASSCOM HR 2013 Survey also indicated that given business dynamics and just in time hiring, companies are increasingly blending campus and off campus recruitments.  In addition, as firms expand their global footprint, global hiring is becoming an important priority.

The industry has matured over the last decade and has set many benchmarks for the Indian economy and HR space. In terms of diversity & inclusivity, the industry is now grooming women for leadership across companies and coaching them through global careers, shadowing, leadership councils / programs. Additionally companies are now designing business models for talent from underprivileged backgrounds and people with disability.

NASSCOM also released its ranking of the Top 20 IT-BPM organizations in the country based on India-based FTE headcount of firms with IT-BPM operations in India. These firms account for over 1 million India based employees.
