Wipro launches 3rd edition of its sustainability program for schools and colleges – ‘earthian 2013

Wipro Ltd today announced the commencement of the third edition of the ‘earthian’ program, its annual sustainability program for schools and colleges in India. The program this year is also being launched in Hindi for schools and is now open for registrations. All the content produced by earthian for the program will be made available in Hindi and participants can submit their entries in both English and Hindi. earthian is designed to act as a catalyst for fostering excellence in sustainability thinking and doing amongst young people.

Schools can participate in activity based programs based on the central theme of ‘Water’. These programs will seek to impart a better understanding of the theme through activities that include studying the demand and usage of water, water trail and water quality in their respective schools. In the second segment of the program, the schools are required to submit essays that convey the essence of their understanding of subjects such as energy, agriculture & food, climate change, issues of equity, biodiversity and historical trends in each of these subjects, in a national and global context. An activity book, which details the linkages of the program to academic curriculum and how teachers can get involved in the program, is available for all participating institutes.

Teams from colleges can participate by submitting a critical and well-reasoned essay, narrative or script which explores multiple dimensions of sustainability issues such as climate change, cities, water stress, and biodiversity loss, and also explore alternative paradigms.

Faculty involvement in the program is critical and imperative for both schools and colleges.

Speaking on the initiative Mr. Anurag Behar, Chief Sustainability Officer of Wipro Ltd, said, “The central vision of earthian is aligned with what we think good education should be about – to build capacity for critical, interdisciplinary and holistic thinking. When applied to the sustainability challenges that humanity faces, this assumes prime importance. The earthian program is designed to be a multi-faceted, participatory experience and not to be just about competition and awards. The third edition of earthian will see a new format for schools wherein we have tried to make the participation itself a rich, learning experience. In parallel, we continue to build the three year engagement program for winning schools and colleges into one that integrates rich experiential learning into the core pedagogy of the institutions.”

Thirty winning institutes will be selected later this year and will be a part of a three year continuing engagement program. The winning institutes will also be awarded a cash prize and certificates at the Wipro earthian annual awards forum in January 2014.

The 30+ selected institutes from earthian 2011 and 2012 are now part of a 3 year continuing engagement program offered by various earthian partners through workshops, talks and student internships in areas such as biodiversity and conservation, water management, alternative pedagogy, environmental measurement.
