Honeywell (NYSE:HON) sponsored two teachers from India to attend its fifth annual Green Boot Camp in San Diego, California, USA. Anamika Pawar, a teacher at Dr. Kalmadi Shamarao High School, Pune, and Charu Mathur, from Kilbil School, Pune, joined 70 middle-school teachers from 10 countries at the weeklong event held in June-end. At Green Boot Camp, teachers turned into students, and learned about sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable technologies.
Launched in 2009, Green Boot Camp gives teachers the tools to inspire their students to be more environmentally conscious, and heighten their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. It also provides curriculum for the classroom.
Honeywell works with a number of San Diego-based organizationsto help educate the teachers — including San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and the California Center for Sustainable Energy — capitalizing on each organization’s unique knowledge of energy and sustainability.
Along with instruction from a variety of eco-focused experts, the teachers constructed a rain-barrel irrigation system at Bayside Community Center to collect rain water for the community gardens on site. They also built a greenhouse, added native plants and mulched the gardens.
Attendees also designed and built wind turbines, and took a guided tour of Balboa Park to learn how sustainability practices are shaping the facility and howLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED)practices are informing preparations for the park's 2015 centennial celebration.
Green Boot Camp is sponsored by Honeywell and was created as part of an environmental initiative of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s global corporate citizenship initiative. To date, 210 teachers, including 3 from India, have attended Green Boot Camp.
“Collaboration is needed to make significant, lasting sustainable contributions,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “Green Boot Camp embodies this spirit by providing a unique experience for teachers to work together and share ideas on how to best impact classrooms around the world.”
