Bentley Acquires Business of Engineering Systems, Australia-based Provider of Structural Analysis and Design Software

Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure, today announced that it has acquired the business of Engineering Systems Pty Ltd, provider of structural analysis and design software to users in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. Engineering Systems’ products include: Microstran for structural analysis; MStower for the design of communications and power transmission structures; and Limcon, a specialty tool for the design of steel connections. With this acquisition, Bentley further extends its market-leading portfolio of structural analysis and design software, which includes STAAD, RAM, ProStructures, and SACS.
For more than 25 years, Engineering Systems’ products have delivered powerful analysis and design capabilities for structural designers in a wide range of infrastructure fields. The users of these products have played a key role in the design of landmark structures around the world, including Wembley Stadium in London, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Hong Kong Stadium, and the Olympic Park railway station in Australia.
Raoul Karp, Bentley vice president, structural and BrIM products, said, “As a result of this acquisition, we will be able to help the users of Microstran, MStower, and Limcon to deliver broader ‘B/IM’ benefits, including through Bentley’s structural Cross-Discipline Coordination Services (www.bentley.com/ism). This enhanced information mobility will enable these new Bentley users to perform structural modeling, analysis, design, documentation, and detailing within integrated and flexible workflows, empowering dynamic collaboration and increased data reuse among structural engineers, detailers, and fabricators. This pays off in increased productivity, reduced errors, and improved quality control.”

He continued, “This acquisition also brings new talent to Bentley. On behalf of my colleagues at Bentley, I am pleased to welcome Richard Collins, former owner of Engineering Systems, to our team. Besides his expertise with Engineering Systems’ software products, Richard has broad experience in structural design and an in-depth understanding of local structural engineering requirements and practices in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia that will help us better serve the needs of our users in these key growth regions.”
Richard Collins said, “I look forward to working with my new colleagues at Bentley on exciting innovations for the structural design community. As the world leader in software for sustaining infrastructure, Bentley offers Microstran, MStower, and Limcon users a uniquely comprehensive portfolio of information modeling and collaboration software, a strong user-centric ethos, and extensive experience in global best practices. These will help users move to the next level in their infrastructure design, engineering, construction, and operations.”

Bentley’s newly acquired structural engineering offerings include:
Microstran – An advanced element library, including catenary cable, gap, and fuse elements, along with its nonlinear and elastic critical load analysis capabilities, makes this product applicable to a wide range of structures.
MStower – Used for the analysis and design of latticed towers and guyed masts, this application requires minimum user input for the definition of structure geometry and loads. Members may be checked to a wide range of national tower codes.
Limcon – This powerful aid for steel connection design is applicable to a comprehensive set of connection types and can check designs to several codes including AISC 360, CSA S16, BS 5950, EC3, AS 4100, and NZS 3404.
