Like Greta Garbo, Suchitra Sen retired from public life since 1978 though she was offered many opportunities to return to the screen, she declined all of them and instead, she lived a private life till yesterday. The iconic Bengali and Hindi film actress Suchitra Sen has passed away at the age of 82 at the Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata early today.She was the first Indian actress to win the best actress award internationally at the Moscow Film Festival in 1962. She retired from the screen in 1978 after a career of over 25 years to a life of quiet seclusion. She has avoided the public gaze after her retirement and has devoted her time to the Ramakrishna Mission. One of Suchitra Sen's best known performances was in Deep Jwele Jaai (1959) in Bengali.For the Hindi hit film Aandhi (1974), where she played role of a politician  (inspired by then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi), Sen received a Filmfare Award nomination as the Best Actress. But Sanjeev Kumar, who played the role of her husband, won the Filmfare award as Best Actor. She is survived by her daughter, actress Moon Moon Sen and two grand daughters actresses Raima Sen and Riya Sen.
