Debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made a spectacular performance in Punjab by winning 4 seats. Cardiologist Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi has won from Patiala, actor-comedian Bhagwant Mann from Sangrur, Sardar Harinder Singh Khalsa from Fategarh Sahib and retired college lecturer Prof. Sadhu Singh from Faridkot. The biggest win margin of 2,11,721 went to satirist and AAP candidate Bhagwant Mann. While the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) held on to its 2009 tally of four seats, Congress was reduced from eight to just three seats largely due to the AAP effect. Congress's vote share in the state was 33% and SAD got 26.4%, AAP took away 24.5% votes in Punjab.
Human Rights activist and senior advocate, AAP's HS Phoolka lost the Ludhiana seat by less than 20 thousand votes to Congress candidate Ravneet Bittu, grandson of former Punjab chief minister Sardar Beant Singh.
