Perspective on Economic Survey

“An Economic Survey from a less than 2 month old Finance Ministry with no Chief Economic Advisor would always have limited implications. It is, however, encouraging to note that the Survey has identified the liberalization of farmers to store and sell agricultural produce as a means to address food inflation and increase productivity. Coming directly from the Finance ministry, such a step would go a long way in addressing some of the man-made supply constraints to controlling food inflation. This would also greatly reduce some of the sensitivity between adverse weather conditions and food prices this year. ZyFin estimates that agriculture as a sector would grow at 5% and overall GDP at 5.7% by the last quarter of FY 2014-15.”
