About District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC)

The Census of India 2001 revealed that over 21 million people in India are suffering from one or the other kind of disability. This is equivalent to 2.1% of the population (2001). About 90% of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) live in areas where no rehabilitation services are available and the biggest challenge is to reach these unreached PWDs.  A new scheme, the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) for persons with disabilities was launched in 2000 as a step towards providing rehabilitation services and implementation of the PWD Act. 1995. The major objectives of these centres are to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services, to disseminate information relating to prevention of disabilities and to mobilise local resources and expertise for development of PWDs. DDRC is centrally sponsored scheme and a collaborative effort of State/District administration and local NGOs/autonomous agency or facilitating agency.

The Govt. of Karnataka in 2013 approved the initiation of a DDRC for Bangalore Rural District, choosing Bangalore Baptist Hospital as the implementing agency. Comprehensive rehabilitation services will be provided to four taluks of the District, namely, Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Doddaballapur and Hoskote with a population of about 10 lakhs and an estimated 60,000 PWDs in the district. The overall aim of this project is to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities and promote equal rights and their inclusion into mainstream society.
