HP Labs India and BITS Pilani announce PhD Fellowship

HP Labs India announced the launch of the ‘BITS-HP Labs India PhD Fellowship’ in collaboration with Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS). The fellowship is designed to further research in the area of information and communication technologies relevant to economies such as India .

As part of the programme, HP Labs India will be offering comprehensive scholarships to successful candidates so that they can pursue PhD research with the highly respected BITS, Pilani for up to three years.

"The BITS-HP Pilani fellowship is one of our marquee Industry-Academia initiatives in the country. The fellowship has been instituted to offer candidates an opportunity to work to the highest academic standards with HP Labs - a leading industrial research laboratory and the corporate research group of HP”, said Anjaneyulu Kuchibhotla, Research Manager, HP Labs India . “Through this initiative, we look forward to attract candidates of exceptional abilities for research in emerging technologies relevant to countries such as India ”, he added.

Candidates will have access to HP Labs India facilities in Bangalore as they pursue their research. The fellowship will also cover expenses for attending one selected international conference and presenting a research paper.

Speaking on the collaboration, Prof Ravi Prakash, Dean, Research and Consultancy Division, BITS, Pilani, said, “The fellowship will help us proactively contribute to the development of elite research professionals—individuals who will be making tangible contributions to society globally including India. BITS Pilani and HP Labs India have had a close working relationship over the last several years. This fellowship would help keep up the momentum in our collaboration.”

Applications are requested from students who hold a Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology and are interested in doing doctoral work in the following areas:
§ Document Image Processing
§ Human Computer Interfaces
§ Multimodal Systems
§ Human Computer Information Retrieval
§ Peer to Peer Systems


The fellowship is offered for one year and will be renewed annually based on satisfactory performance in studies and research, for a maximum of three years. The candidates will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 per month, and HP Labs India will cover all academic-related fees. Additional living expenses of Rs 20,000 will also be included in the scholarship when they are working in Bangalore .
