Canadian International School sets up Leo Club at its campus to serve the community

Community initiative is an integral part at Canadian International School. Through Community Service, all students at CIS have been given the opportunity to make connections between their intellectual and social development and the benefits that they can contribute to the community. As part of the initiative, Canadian International School has set up Leo Club at its campus. Such a program allows students who are involved in the community service programme to become responsible for their own actions and to realize that they can make a difference. There is a combined endeavor in CIS to make every child a good human being and strong individual.

As part of the program, there are a lot of activities that will be initiated like volunteering at some of the medical camps that the Lions Club conducts every month and going out to different hospitals and asking them to donate the medicine for these camps, conducting awareness talk on organ donation in association with Gift Your Organ Foundation, blood donation camp at CIS for teachers and parents, fundraisers for some of these causes etc.

Around the world, more than 6,000 Leo clubs put the energy and dedication of young people to work in their communities. Leo Clubs encourage youths to develop leadership qualities by engaging in social service activities. LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. They conduct various projects in the fields of health care, elders, children, differently abled, literacy and education, and self-development. They are sponsored by parent Lions Clubs. The Canadian International School Leo Club will be sponsored by the Sanjaynagar Lions Club of Bangalore.

Canadian International School holds Recycled Regatta

Canadian International School, Bangalore initiated a unique and first of its kind event – ‘Recycled Regatta’ recently at its campus.  It was an all-day event for students in grades 6 - 11.  Students created boats made entirely out of recycled materials and capable of holding a student who had to race the floatable unit across the pool. The students paddled across the swimming pool providing a hilarious though ingenious competition for the cheering spectators. Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, it was a formally structured event, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule, specifications and procedures of the event.

Everyone anticipated the competition to see whose boat would float and who could pilot it the fastest through the race course. Everyone had such a fun time, especially the pilots. Even though a few got wet, they all had an amusing time. It was great to watch all cheer for one another.

I was incredibly proud that we could do so much for the environment and have so much fun while doing it. I thought it was incredible that we could all come together to make a better place for us to live in, said one of the students.

Tide's Up at CIS! Students from Grades 6 - 11 took part in "the First Annual Recycled Regatta.  It was a day of designing, exploring, creating and just plain fun.  Boats made were sailed across the swimming pool, with House Teams competing against each other for the honor of being the last one standing....or in this case....floating ! – Shane Kells, Head of School

The Recycled Regatta is an exciting educational event designed to bring awareness to the amount of waste we produce everyday. Students are required to use innovative thinking and problem solving skills to turn garbage into a boat capable of holding one of their peers. Finding creative ways to recycle and reuse waste is essential to preserving and protecting our delicate planet. Also the raft building skills will come in handy should the students ever find themselves stranded on a desert island. - Joshua Brinn, IT Integrationist / MS Science Teacher
