Chinese made RPG launchers used by militants in Manipur attack

A high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh,Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag, Nation Security Advisor Ajit Doval took place today after massacre of 20 army men in Chandel District of Manipur.The army has launched massive combing operations in the area.The martyed soldiers belonged to the 6 Dogra infantry regiment.The militants used Chinese made Rocket Propelled Grenade or RPG launchers and other fire arms.This is the worst casualties the Army has suffered since the Kargil War of 1999.

Government of India has taken a number of measures to encourage the youth to join Armed Forces to meet the shortages, including sustained image projection and publicity campaign to create awareness among the youth on the advantages of taking up a challenging and satisfying career.  Further, government has taken various steps to make armed forces jobs attractive.  These include implementation of the recommendation of the VI Central Pay Commission with improved pay structure, additional family accommodation through Married Accommodation Project (MAP) and improvement in promotion prospects in the Armed Forces.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Shri Ram Kumar Kashyap and Shri KC Tyagi in Rajya Sabha yesterday.

Procurement of ammunition is undertaken on the basis of a Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan (LTIPP) (15 years), Service Capital Acquisition Plan (SCAP) (5 years) and the Annual Acquisition Plan (AAP) (two years).
  

Massive flood relief operations by #IndianArmy in J&K

The State of Jammu & Kashmir has been experiencing heavy rainfall in last 3 to 4 days and almost all rivers of the State are in spate, flowing above the danger mark. Armed Forces are carrying out flood relief operations inspite of continuous heavy downpour and bad weather conditions prevailing, and rescuing and evacuating stranded civilians as well as service personnel stuck in the floods. Six NDRF teams have been airlifted by an IAF aircraft from Bathinda to Srinagar.

120 Army columns have been deployed across the State rescuing more than 9000 civilians so far. IAF aircraft have flown about 30 sorties to induct NDRF teams and have evacuated 212 people so far, who were stranded in Akhnoor, Gagariyal and Fort Bridge. A major rescue operation was conducted by IAF in Akhnoor rescuing 11 adults and 03 children by a MI-17 helicopter. 15 MI-17 Medium Lift Helicopters, seven Light helicopters and three AN-32 and one IL-76 Transport Aircraft have been placed on standby across the State.

The relief effort is being coordinated by HQ Army Northern Command in Udhampur in consultation with the Advance Air HQ. The situation is being monitored and reviewed regularly by the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff at HQ IDS and meeting was held for the same with all stakeholders.

An Indian army soldier was killed in a gunfight between separatist guerrillas and security forces in north Kashmir's Kupwara district late Tuesday."One sepoy of the army was killed in a gunfight which occurred near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar town late yesterday (Tuesday) night," a police officer said to news agency.

#IndianArmy Major Mukund Varadharajan who died in Shopian operation in Kashmir

Major Mukund Varadharajan was with 44th battalion of Rashtriya Rifles, He was killed in an encounter with Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Shopian in South Kashmir yesterday. His father R. Varadharajan, a retired official of Indian Overseas Bank. Major Varadharajan completed B. Com at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya at Selaiyur and went on to do a diploma in journalism at Madras Christian College, Tambaram. He joined OTA, St. Thomas Mount, and passed out in 2004 to become a lieutenant.  He served at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, and was in Lebanon on a United Nations Mission. Mukund Varadharajan was married to Indu and has a three-year-old daughter Arshea.
