Bangalore and Kochi Engineers win Lenovo's DO Network challenge to take away the prize of USD 25,000

The results are out! ‘India Engineered’, a project led by Krishna Raj SR, and his team Jyothi Jennifer Kurian, Manu Mukundan and Abulize MV, have been voted the winner of the first phase of Lenovo’s Do Network. The winners battled it out against 9 participating teams to emerge as India’s most promising technology inventors for their project on empowering Engineering students through online tutorials and sponsorships. The team will receive the grand prize of USD 25,000 from Lenovo.
Speaking on the occasion, Amar Babu, Managing Director, Lenovo India said “We are pleased to announce ‘India Engineered’ as the winner for the first phase of Do Network in India. I also congratulate the other top 9 teams for their stellar performance. I would like to thank all the participants and the youth of the country for the excellent response that Do Network has received”.
Started on December 8, 2011, the 3 month long competition saw over 1200 extraordinary projects going head-to-head. A team of 8 high-profile mentors such as Rajan Anandan (MD Google India), Rajiv Makhni (Managing Editor, Technology at NDTV,  India), Mahesh Murthy (Managing Partner, Pinstorm & Seedfund), Kishore AK(CEO & Co-Founder, Althea system), Narvir C Sud (Retired Scientist G & Lead Auditor, ISO 9000, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Defence Research & Development Organisation), Maxwell Pereira (Ex-Commissioner, Delhi Traffic Police), Prof. Shiva Prasad (Dean- Academics, IIT Bombay) and Shantanu Prakash (Chairman & MD Educomp solutions, Founder and Managing Trustee of the Learning Leadership Foundation (LLF), evaluated, shortlisted and selected the top 10 teams. Post the selection, the mentors helped the teams to fine-tune their projects before they faced the ultimate test of online voting. The winner emerged after more than 1 lakh votes were cast by the Indian public across projects.  “The over-whelming response that Do Network received reinforces the fact that each of us nurtures an idea of a better India and Lenovo has endeavoured to create this platform to bring those ideas to life. Do Network is an initiative that provides an opportunity to enable the youth to be the agents of change through the use of technology”, Amar Babu added.
“It has been a long road for these very passionate Doers and it’s been fantastic to see such a worthy project evolve and emerge”, said Rajan Anandan, MD, Google India. “The Do Network has provided us with the rare opportunity to support, guide and nurture some really innovative and brilliant Indians and I am sure it will continue to inspire many more great projects in future.”
‘India Engineered’ aims to set up a mobile workshop, which will conduct online sessions and focus on imparting practical education to engineering students by established Engineers.
“The past three months have been intense but hugely rewarding”, said Krishna Raj SR, Project Lead, India Engineered. “We were excited to have a platform like The Do Network to share our ideas, highly respected mentors and resources to develop them, and we now look forward to implementing the idea in India. It has been a privilege to be part of such a meaningful campaign and to be selected the winner out of so many other deserving projects!”

The Do Network comprises a series of four 90-day contest cycles, with different themes and thematic challenges introduced for each cycle. The second cycle of the competition is due to start later in the year.

The Do Network is an online platform designed to inspire people to share their ideas with a larger community of like-minded Doers, subsequently forming project teams and developing these ideas into tangible actions to improve the community. Resources and tools were provided to the project teams, including the guidance of respected and influential mentors. A total of 1, 07,221 votes were cast before ‘India Engineered’ emerged as the winner in India.

Bangalore Student ‘Sachin Kukke’ Among Six Winners of Global YouTube Space Lab Science Competition

YouTube, Lenovo, and Space Adventures today announced the six regional winners of YouTube Space Lab (youtube.com/spacelab), the global science competition that challenged 14-18 year-olds to design a science experiment that can be performed in space.  In cooperation with space agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Space Lab will provide two global winners the chance to have their experiment conducted and live streamed to the world using a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop from the International Space Station on YouTube.

Out of the 6 regional winners, one winner in the 17-18 year old category is Bangalore’s 18 year old Sachin Kukke from BMS College of Engineering. His winning experiment was based on Ferrofluid and aims to measure the thermal conductivity of ferrofluids in microgravity.

“We’re very excited to announce ‘Sachin Kukke’ as the regional winner from India. YouTube Spacelab in association with Lenovo saw participation from over 80 countries with the highest (40 percent) entries coming from India. We want to thank and congratulate all the winners, including the 9 Indian winners whose experiments were shortlisted in the top 60. Through initiatives like these, we want students to get inspired and explore the wonders of science and technology.” said, Nikhil Rungta, Country Marketing Head, Google India.

Sachin Kukke the Indian winner from APAC region, said, “This is like a dream come true, I had never ever imagined that I would get to experience zero gravity in my life. I had hopes of making it to the final six but I was not so sure. I am very excited to win this and I am really looking forward to meeting the other finalists and experiencing the Zero gravity flight.”

The six regional winners, who hail from Egypt, India, New Zealand, Spain, and the U.S., are:

14 - 16 year olds:

Patrick Zeng & Derek Chan, New Zealand (Asia Pacific region)

Laura Calvo & María Vilas, Spain (Europe, Middle East and Africa region)

Dorothy Chen & Sara Ma, U.S. (The Americas region)

17 - 18 year olds:

Sachin Kukke, Bangalore, India (Asia Pacific region)

Amr Mohamed, Egypt (Europe, Middle East and Africa region)

Emerald Bresnahan, U.S. (The Americas region)

The six regional winning teams will visit Washington DC in March for a series of activities and events to honor their achievements, including a ZERO-G Flight, a Lenovo IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook™, a special tour and dinner at the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum at Dulles, and an awards ceremony at the Newseum on March 22. The two global winners (one team from each of the two age groups) will be announced at the awards ceremony on March 22, and will later this year have their experiments performed 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and live streamed on YouTube as part of a global event celebrating science and space.

In addition, the two global winners will get to choose a unique space experience:  a trip to Japan to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS, or once they are 18-years old, a one-of-a-kind astronaut training experience in Star City, Russia, the training center for Russian cosmonauts.

"This grand project demonstrates that math and science matter,” said Zahaan Bharmal, Google’s Head of Marketing Operations, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and the man behind the idea of Space Lab.  “These six winners represent the next generation of scientists and even space explorers. Their families, schools, local communities and countries should be very proud.”

"An India finalist in the Global YouTube Spacelab science competition indicates the zest with which Indians foster their passion for science" says Shailendra Katyal, Director, Marketing, Lenovo India. "We believe competitions like our partnership with YouTube Space Lab provides students with an opportunity to consider science as a career aspiration. We congratulate all the 6 finalists and wish them luck, may the best one win."

In October 2011, YouTube invited budding scientists in two age categories, 14-16 years old and 17-18 years old, either alone or in groups of up to three, to submit a YouTube video describing their experiment to YouTube.com/SpaceLab.  The Space Lab channel itself, which serves as a launch pad for discovering the best space and science videos on YouTube, has received more than 50 million combined video views worldwide throughout the course of the competition.

Over 150,000 YouTube users worldwide helped determine the six regional winners by voting for their favorite experiment.  The YouTube community casted votes alongside our prestigious panel of judges, including NASA’s Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté.

YouTube Space Lab Announces 60 Finalists in Competition to Send Students’ Experiments into Space

YouTube, Lenovo, and Space Adventures in cooperation with space agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), today announced the sixty finalists of YouTube Space Lab (youtube.com/spacelab), the global science competition that challenges 14-18 year-olds to design a science experiment that can be performed in space.  YouTube Space Lab received thousands of  video submissions from more than 80 countries, a remarkable number given the unique challenge of designing an experiment that could actually be carried out in space - something that has traditionally been the mission of qualified astronauts and scientists.  Entrants not only described their science experiment ideas via video, but demonstrated and animated the procedures they were submitting.

The U.S. led with 10 finalists, followed by India with nine.  Rounding out the top five countries in terms of total submissions are Poland, Canada, and Spain.  U.S. finalists hail from states including California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Vermont.  A complete list of finalists is below.

Starting today through January 24, the YouTube community will be invited to judge these entries alongside a prestigious panel of judges, including renowned scientist, Professor Stephen Hawking, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté, to determine the winners.  YouTube users and the judging panel will determine 6 regional winners (2 teams from each of the 3 regions) who will travel to Washington, DC, where the global winners (2 teams from each age group) will be announced in March.

"We’re thrilled with the response to YouTube Space Lab,” said Zahaan Bharmal, Google’s Head of Marketing Operations, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and the man behind the idea for Space Lab.  “They rose to the challenge - demonstrating great imagination, creativity and passion with their ideas.  Our mission was to inspire the next generation and the response shows, we've done just that. Today's Space Lab entrants are tomorrow's space explorers.”

High Interest Across the World

Space Lab invited budding scientists in two age categories, 14-16 years old and 17-18 years old, either alone or in groups of up to three, to submit a YouTube video describing their experiment to YouTube.com/SpaceLab.  The Space Lab channel itself, which serves as a launch pad for discovering the best space and science videos on YouTube, has received more than 40 million combined video views worldwide.

The majority of entries, approximately forty percent, came from India, followed by the U.S. with fifteen percent.  The remaining top ten countries in terms of submissions include the U.K., Russia, Israel, Canada, Spain, Italy, Poland and Japan.  Seventy-eight percent of the entries came  from the 14-16 year old teams with twenty-two percent from the 17–18 year old teams.  Nearly half of the youth entered the competition on their own, while teams of two and three students comprised slightly more than 50 percent.

“Space Lab brings together the brightest young minds in the world today – and we’re impressed with all of the  thought-provoking entries,” said Michael Schmedlen, worldwide director of education, Lenovo. “From a global education standpoint, we’re seeing a strong correlation between the entries received and the results from our Global Student Science and Technology Outlook survey, which reveals students in emerging countries - India, Mexico and Russia – have  a greater interest in and prioritize  science-related careers over students in other developed countries.”

Six regional winners will be announced in February and will gather in Washington, D.C., in March to experience a ZERO-G flight and receive a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop.  From them, two global winners, one from each age group, will be announced and later have their experiments performed 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and live streamed on YouTube from a ThinkPad laptop as part of a global event celebrating science and space.  Additionally, the global winners will get to choose a unique space experience as a prize:  a trip to Japan to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS, or once they are 18 years old, a one-of-a-kind astronaut training experience in Star City, Russia, the training center for Russian cosmonauts.
