Chief of the Naval Staff to attend Naval Investiture Ceremony at Kochi tomorrow

Admiral RK Dhowan PVSM AVSM YSM ADC, Chief of the Naval Staff will be visiting Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 12 Jun 14 to present awards to winners of Gallantry and Distinguished Service Awards. The Presidential Awards for naval personnel are announced on 15 Aug and 26 Jan every year. These awards are presented to the recipients by the President bi-annually during the Defence Investiture Ceremony (DIC) and annually by the Chief of Naval Staff during the Naval Investiture Ceremony (NIC). On this occasion, the CNS will present awards to winners of Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry), Nao Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) and Vishisht Seva Medal. In addition best performing operational units (ship/ submarine/ air squadron) as well as shore establishments of the Indian Navy will be presented with a ‘Unit Citation’ by the CNS. The Unit citation is awarded to a ship/ submarine/aircraft squadron or shore establishment in recognition of the ‘outstanding service of a collective nature in peace and less than war conditions’. The Capt Ravi Dhir Memorial Medal will also be presented to the air station/squadron adjudged best in promoting flight safety over the last year.

Later in the day, the CNS will chair the Annual General Body Meeting of the Naval Group Insurance Fund (NGIF) and Indian Naval Benevolent Association (INBA). Various aspects pertaining to insurance and welfare schemes for Naval personnel would be discussed during the meeting. Whilst the primary function of the NGIF is to provide life insurance cover for naval personnel, the INBA - which is a benevolent association that looks after the welfare of our personnel and families, is involved in a number of welfare activities that have a profound impact on the well-being of the naval community. These include rehabilitation of naval widows, financial assistance for special children, grants for personnel affected by natural calamities and merit scholarships for education of deserving children of naval personnel.

The Annual General Body Meeting will be attended by senior representatives from all the naval commands besides administrators of the funds and about 500 members stationed at Kochi.

Admiral RK Dhowan at Southern Naval Command

Sound training is the foundation of exceptional operational tempo said Admiral RK Dhowan, Chief of the Naval Staff here today.  The Admiral, on his first official visit to Southern Naval Command after assuming office, was addressing Navy personnel at a ceremonial parade. Referring to the recent accidents, the Admiral exhorted all hands to pull together to reinforce professional pride in the white uniform, and take Navy to greater heights.  Terming this century as the century of the sea, the Admiral emphasized the importance of the Indian Ocean and the preeminent role, of Navy as the engine of nations’ economy. He also informed the personnel on parade that INS Vikramaditya is operationally deployed with Mig 29 Ks integrated with the carrier. Other addition to Navy’s capabilities includes commissioning of new advanced platforms and air assets as well as accretion of satellites into network centric operations.
Earlier, Admiral RK Dhowan was received by Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command,  on his arrival on Parade. The other engagements of the Navy Chief today include addressing Officers and Sailors of Southern Naval Command and an interaction with the civilian employees. He would also visit the newly commissioned Joint Operations Centre, ships of Southern Naval Command as well as INS Dronacharya before departing for New Delhi tomorrow.

Admiral Hiranandani Trophy for Naval Warfare Specialisation Courses

Lieutenant Commander Mithilesh Upadhyay undergoing the Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) course won the prestigious Admiral Hiranandani Trophy for the best performance during the year long Naval Warfare Specialisation Courses conducted by Southern Naval Command. Gunnery and Missile Warfare, Navigation and Direction, Signal, Satellite and Network Centric Warfare are the other courses from among whom the winners were selected. Lieutenant Commander Ankit Bhade, Lieutenant Commander  KU Limaye and Lieutenant Vineet Sharma won book prizes as runners up. The trophy was presented by Smt Susheel Hiranandani, the spouse of the late Vice Admiral GM Hiranandani in whose memory, the trophy has been instituted.   Rear Admiral MS Pawar, Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command, Dr Manick Hiranandani son of the late Admiral and other invitees witnessed the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Admiral Pawar emphasised that the specialist officers armed with theoretical knowledge would now have to hone their professional calibre on board fleet ships even as they mentor subordinate officers. He also complimented the Hiranandani family for their abiding interest in the Navy. Commodore G Prakash who welcomed the gathering recalled the illustrious Naval career of the late Admiral. Vice Admiral Gulab Mohanlal Hiranandani retired as the Vice Chief of the Navy in 1989. His inspiring innings in white uniform included being the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet during 1971 war, commissioning Commanding Officer of INS Rajput as well as helming Southern Naval Command as Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command. The Admiral served in the UPSC till 1995 after retirement.   Thereafter, as the official historian of the Indian Navy, Admiral Hiranandani chronicled Indian Navy’s history in three acclaimed volumes- Transition to Triumph, Transition to Eminence and Transition to Guardianship.

About Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan: Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, ADC is currently the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. A Navigation and Direction Specialist, Vice Admiral Dhowan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (45th Course, Charlie Squadron) and the Defence Services Staff College. On completion of three years of training in NDA, he joined his first ship, INS Delhi in 1974 where he was awarded the ‘telescope’ on being adjudged as Best Cadet. He was later awarded the ‘Sword of Honour’ on completion of Midshipman training. He has undergone various courses in India and abroad including the Sea Harrier Direction course at Yeovilton, UK and the Naval Command Course at Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA.

The Vice Admiral has held various important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters, which include Deputy Director Naval Operations, Joint Director Naval Plans, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Policy and Plans)and as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy). He has also served as the Senior Instructor at DSSC Wellington. Ships commanded by him include INS Khukri, a missile corvette, INS Ranjit, a Kashin class destroyer, and the missile destroyer INS Delhi. He served as the Indian Naval Adviser at the High Commission of India, London from March 2000 to 2003 and as Chief Staff Officer (Operations), Headquarters Western Naval Command (Mumbai) from 31 Jan 2004 to 17 Jul 2005.

The Vice Admiral had the privilege to command the Eastern Fleet as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, one of the two operational fleet of the Indian Navy and subsequently took over as Chief Of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam. This was followed by the prestigious appointment of the Commandant National Defence Academy, a post that he held till 30 Nov 09 before taking over as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff at IHQ, MOD(Navy), the post he held till 30 Aug 11. His leisure pursuits include Golf and Yachting.

Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and IAF in Search of Missing MH 370 in Bay of Bengal

Assets of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and IAF have been deployed in a coordinated search of the area in South Andaman Sea for the missing Malaysian Airliner. Indian Navy has been nominated as the lead service for the coordination of the operation. The joint effort is being coordinated from Maritime Operations Centre of the Indian Navy at New Delhi.

Specific areas have been allocated by the Malaysian authorities for search by Indian ships and aircraft. Presently, two ships of Indian Navy, INS Saryu and INS Kumbhir are combing the designated areas in South Andaman Sea. INS Kesari has replaced INS Kumbhir at around 1500h today for the search as it is also carrying an integral helicopter.  In addition, two Coast Guard vessels are also carrying out search along the coastline. Two Dornier aircraft of Indian Navy and Coast Guard are also carrying out aerial search in the vicinity of the Andaman coastline.

The Malaysian authorities have also requested for a search in the Bay of Bengal, expanse of which is approx. 9000 sq km (15 km X 600 Km). This area is approx. 900 km due West of Port Blair. Search in this area would be undertaken by the resources of Eastern Naval Command.

The Joint Operations Room at Port Blair has been activated to monitor the progress of the search operations. The Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command has been nominated as the Overall Force Commander of the Indian Forces.

Blood donation camp by Navy men

The first blood donation camp of the year was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command at the Navy hospital INHS Sanjivani here today. A total of 84 units of blood were donated by the Navy men who volunteered from ships and establishments based at Kochi. The collected units were handed over to the local chapter of IMA (Indian Medical Association)  at  Kochi. Each unit of blood prepared into components by the IMA will benefit multiple recipients in various hospitals in and around Kochi. Last year 4 such camps were held by the Navy for the benefit of local community and  IMA had felicitated Navy for its service of blood donation.

NAVY “OBSERVERS” COMPLETE TRAINING

14 Officers of the Indian Navy and 4 Officers from Indian Coast Guard graduated as Observers at an impressive ceremony at the Naval Air Station INS Garuda at Kochi. Observers direct the tactical operations in Navy’s maritime patrol aircraft and anti submarine aircraft. The Chief Guest at the Parade was Commodore G Prakash, Director Maritime Warfare Center who awarded Wings to the qualified officers.

Commodore G Prakash in address to the Officers on Parade, defined war as an art where sophisticated hardware are provided to give the man behind the machine more time to out think the enemy.  He reiterated that Knowledge is power and exhorted the Officers to excel in their core competencies. Lieutenant BK Barik was adjudged Best in Flying and awarded Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Eastern Naval Command Trophy. He also came first in Overall Order of Merit and bagged the Uttar Pradesh Trophy. Lieutenant K Varun received the Sub Lieutenant RV Kunte Memorial Book Prize for coming first in ground subjects. From amongst the batch of Short Service Officers, Assistant Commandant Deepika Rathore was adjudged First in Overall Order of Merit and Best in Flying and Sub Lieutenant A Avinash, the best in Ground subjects. The Officers underwent intensive ground and flying training during the 46 weeks course, wherein they were trained in Air Warfare Tactics, Anti Submarine Warfare and Surveillance operation in addition to basic training in Air Navigation and Flying Procedures. Captain MMS Shergill, Commanding Officer of INS Garuda conducted the Passing Out Parade. Commander SMGRV Saripalli is the officer in Charge of the Observer School , the Alma Mater of Navy’s Observers. 

Australian Frigate calls at Kochi

HMAS (Her Majesty’s Australian Ship) Darwin a long range escort frigate of the Australian Navy called at Kochi today. Commanded by Commander Terence Morrison, the ship is en route to Western Arabian Sea for operations with other multinational forces. INS Kalpeni welcomed the Australian warship outside harbor and led her in.

Mr Sean Kelly, the Consul General of Australia at Chennai who is in the city in connection with the visit accompanied by Commander Terence Morrison called on Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command. The ship will depart Kochi on 15th morning. Meanwhile, professional exchanges, sporting encounters and social interactions have planned between the two Navies.

India- Japan Coast Guards hold drills off Kochi

13th edition of India- Japan Coast Guard joint exercise was held off Kochi today. JCG (Japan Coast Guard Ship) Mizuho and its integral helicopter, Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS)  Samrat, Chetak helicopter, Dornier aircraft, and  ICGS C-404 took part in the exercise tiltled Sahayog- Kaijin 2014, and held approximately 20 nautical miles off Kochi. Admiral Yuji Sato, Commandant of Japan Coast Guard, and Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director General of Indian Coast Guard who were  embarked on board ICGS Samrat witnessed the exercise. The exercises included cross deck landings, anti piracy drills, search and rescue demonstration and a fire fighting demonstration. Addressing the media jointly on board ICGS Samrat, on completion of the exercise, both Admirals expressed satisfaction at successful conduct of the exercise. Such exercises improved inter operability and confidence in operating together, and are aimed at capacity building they said. In reply to a specific question, Vice Admiral Thapliyal  pointed out the fact that threat of piracy has been wiped out of India’s west coast through joint efforts of Indian Navy and Coast Guard and underscored the fact that this area needs  to be removed from the definition of high risk area for piracy. The joint exercise between Coast Guards of India and Japan held annually since 1999, focuses on anti piracy procedures, pollution control measures and other areas of common professional interest. Inspector General SPS Basra, Commander Coast Guard Region West and senior officials of Japan Coast Guard delegation also witnessed the exercise.

Visit of Japan Coast Guard Ship Mizuho to Kochi

Japanese Coast Guard ship Mizuho arrived Kochi Saturday morning for a five-day visit as a part of 13th in series of Indo – Japan joint Coast Guard exercises. During the period of stay the Coast Guard personnel from both countries will interact to exchange views and methods in the field of anti piracy and Search &Rescue (SAR) operations.
The Joint exercise, which will be conducted off Kochi on 14th, will be witnessed by Admiral Yuji Sato, Commandant, Japan Coast Guard in the presence of Vice Admiral Anurag Thapaliyal, AVSM, Director General Indian Coast Guard. Apart from joint exercise the two Coast Guards will also engage in other capacity building activities. The Japanese Coast Guard Ship called on the Commander Coast Guard Dist. (Kerala & Mahe) DIG TKS Chandran, TM.
The Japanese Coast Guard ship Mizuho, which is here for the exercise, is a 130m vessel with an integral helicopter. JCG Mizuho is commanded by Captain Moriya Fukui and has a complement of 63 elite crewmembers.

Aeronautical Engineers complete training

At an impressive Passing Out parade held at the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology (NIAT) at Naval Base today, fourteen officers, including two from the Indian Coast Guard passed out on successful completion of Aeronautical Specialisation course spanning over 52 weeks. The parade was reviewed by Rear Admiral K Ravikiran, Admiral Superintendent, Naval Ship Repair Yard Kochi. Lt Cdr Ankush Kumar Singh was awarded Director General Coast Guard trophy for Best All Rounder of the passing out course. The HAL trophy for first in the order of merit amongst Air Engineer Officers was awarded to Lt KV Kannan. Lt Sanchit Arya was adjudged first in the order of merit amongst the Air Electrical Officers. Venduruthy trophy for the best Air Technical Project was awarded to the syndicate of Lt Manish Kumar Panwar and Lt Sushil Yadav.

 The officers would now proceed to various frontline squadrons of the Navy  and Coast Guard for on job training prior to joining the Fleet Air Arm. On completion they would earn M.Tech degree in Aeronautical Engineering under the aegis of Cochin University of Science and Technology. Commodore Deepak Bansal, Director of NIAT said that the present course underwent a revamped curriculum with inclusion of subjects like Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wind Tunnel Testing, Aero Engine Performance Evaluation, Aircraft Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics, keeping with the requirements of 4th/5th generation aircraft. Student officers benefitted from guest lectures by eminent specialists from aero cluster labs of the DRDO, Captains of Industry, faculty of IITs and IISc which provided them an insight into current aviation technologies of platforms like the P-8I, AJT Hawk and Mig-29K. Over the years NIAT has grown to become the largest training establishment in the three services in terms of the number of courses being conducted annually and the only Armed Forces Institute to award M.Tech degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

ICGS Abheek commissioned by Defence Minister

ICGS (Indian Coast Guard Ship) Abheek, the second Fast Patrol Vessel of the Indian Coast Guard designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) was commissioned here today by Shri AK Antony, Defence Minister.  Speaking on the occasion, Shri Antony said that as the resources on land are getting depleted at a rapid pace, nations are turning to oceans for sustenance. Protecting and policing the waters against a wide spectrum of threats is the top most priority he said. The Coastal Surveillance Network and various other measures are in an advanced stage of implementation to strengthen coastal security apparatus. Dwelling on the several challenges facing the shipbuilding industry, Shri Antony, expressed satisfaction that CSL has designed and delivered such a fine ship. He also conveyed his best wishes to the Commanding Officer and crew of the ship. Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director General of Indian Coast Guard who addressed the gathering said that the ship is the 23rd commissioning that the Indian Coast Guard has achieved this year, which is not only a testimony to the country’s ship building capabilities, but also the fast paced modernization of the Indian Coast Guard fleet which today boasts of more than 90 ships and craft and over 60 aircraft.

ICGS Abheek, commanded by Commandant Manoj Kumar Negi has a crew of 39 personnel and would be based at Chennai. Propelled by water jet with a maximum speed of 33 Knots and an endurance of 1500 nautical miles, the ship is capable of undertaking multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation. The ship has an integrated gun mount with indigenous fire control system. Prof KV Thomas, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, other people’s representatives from the area, Commodore Kartik Subramaniam (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, senior officials of Indian Coast Guard, CSL, Indian Navy and others attended the function.

 

Indian Navy wins Services Football trophy after 33 years

In a keenly contested match at the Command Stadium, Naval Base Kochi, Indian Navy beat Indian Army Red 1-0, to win the Services Football championship. Indian Navy has regained the Services Football trophy for the first time since 1980. The Navy team led by PS Sumesh, Chief Petty Officer, fought off  stiff and unrelenting attacks from Army Red to hold on to the lead gained in the first half. Sumesh is also Captain of the Services team - reigning Santosh Trophy champions. Riyad Bakruddin Sea II scored the lone goal of the match for the Navy.   Army Green and Indian Airforce came third and fourth respectively. Arjun Tudu, Havildar of Army Red was adjudged Player of the tournament. Players selected for the Services team were also announced at the conclusion of the final match. Surgeon Rear Admiral Girish Gupta, Command Medical Officer of Southern Naval Command was the Chief Guest. Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command paid an impromptu visit to the grounds to congratulate the Navy team on learning about their triumph. INS Garuda conducted the event.

Thulasi Kakkat is SNC Military Photo Award Winner

Shri Thulasi Kakkat, Senior News Photographer of The Hindu at Kochi has won the 4th Southern Naval Command Military Photography Award. The award instituted by Southern Naval Command for photojournalists to foster positive interest in military subjects consists of a plaque, a citation and a cash award of Rupees Three Thousand. The Venduruthy award with a cash prize of Rupees Five Thousand has been won by Shri PR Rajesh  of the Kochi bureau of Mangalam  daily. The Garuda award with a cash prize of Rupees Two Thousand has been won by Shri Sidheekul Akber of Kochi bureau of Mathrubhumi daily. This year an additional special jury award has been declared which has been bagged by Shri Prakash Karimba  of Madhyamam daily Kozhikode. Rear Admiral R Harikumar, Flag Officer Sea Training, Commodore P Suresh, Commanding Officer INS Venduruthy and Captain MMS Shergill, Commanding Officer INS Garuda comprised the jury . 49 photo journalists from across the country participated in this year’s Military Photo Exhibition held in association with Ernakulam Press Club, during the Navy Fest.

Visit of Maldives Defence Minister to Kochi

The Defence Minister of Maldives Mr Mohamed Nazim arrived at Kochi today on the second leg of his visit to India. The official visit, at the invitation of the Defence Minister of India, had commenced at New Delhi on 11th December. At Kochi, Mr Mohamed Nazim visited establishments of the Southern Naval Command, where personnel of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) undergo training. An important itinerary of the Defence Minister’s programme was unveiling of aircraft frame marking of the Advanced Light Helicopter being prepared for Maldives. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nazim said that India has always stood with Maldives at the time of need and especially mentioned the assistance in capacity building across the defence sector. Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command  who presided over the function said that India considers Maldives a very important neighbor and brought out the fact that that Maldives has been an outstanding contributor towards enhancing the surveillance and security in the Indian Ocean region. MNDF ships routinely contributed to anti piracy patrols as a result of which the threat of piracy has receded he said.


Earlier on arrival at Kochi, Mr Mohamed Nazim was received at the Naval airport by Vice Admiral Satish Soni, and accorded a Guard of Honour. The Minister held discussions with the Admiral on training matters. Training facilities are offered to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel in Indian Naval training establishments since 1988. MNDF personnel have been availing on an average, 35 courses every year for the past few years. Other aspects of the collaborative partnership between the two Indian Ocean neighbours include among others material assistance, and surveillance assistance for the exclusive economic zone of Maldives. Senior Officials of the Ministry of External Affairs, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Indian Navy and trainees of MNDF at Southern Naval Command witnessed the event. Mr Mohamed Nazim will conclude his visit to India tomorrow.

Navy's operational prowess wows Kochi

The Kochi back waters with thousands of residents watching from its shores, witnessed an awe inspiring demonstration of the range of Navy’s operational bandwidth today in the presence of Shri Nikhil Kumar, Honourable Governor of Kerala. The demonstration planned within the limitations imposed by aerial and water obstructions and depth of water in the area commenced with marine commandos delivering the programme schedule to the Honourable Governor. Thereafter, fly past by all aircraft of INS Garuda and the giant TU- 142 aircraft from Chennai was the harbinger of events to unfold in the next two hours. Demonstration of landing of a seaking helicopter on a moving warship, firing of weapons, special operations by the marine commandos from air and water, simulation of VBSS (visit, board, search and seizure) operations, aerobatics by the Advanced Light Helicopters, were some of the operations demonstrated. The warship component was led by INS Teg, the stealth frigate -one of the newer platforms in the Naval inventory, and warships Sharda, Sujata, Sarvekshak, Kabra and Sagardhwani. Newly inducted Fast Interceptor Craft were also fielded to demonstrate its capabilities in coastal security and force protection.  The continuity drill performed by the sailors of INS Dronachrya stood out for its stunning and precise discipline and skills in weapon handling. The demonstration concluded with the ceremonial beating retreat performed by the Naval Band and the lowering of the National Flag and Naval Ensign at sunset. Five warships then sailed past the gathering with their silhouette illuminated. Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief Southern Naval Command presided over the function conducted as part of Navy Day celebrations.

Passing Out Parade of First Training Squadron of Southern Naval Command

144 Sea Trainees successfully completed the important sea phase of their preparation to be leaders in the Navy, at the First Training Squadron of the Southern Naval Command today. The Passing Out Parade was reviewed by Rear Admiral MS Pawar, Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command. Addressing the trainees on parade, Rear Admiral Pawar reminded them that the sea does not condone inadequate knowledge, lack of proficiency or poor leadership. He also exhorted them to understand each man they command, and know their strengths, weaknesses and aspirations. Fairness, compassion, humility and the ability to lead by example would win loyalty of the men, the Admiral added.

First Training Squadron comprising of ships INS Tir, INS Gharial, INS Sujata, INS Sudarshini, INS Tarangini, and Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna, is commanded by Captain VK Sawhney. The 144 trainees comprised of the pioneer batch of Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala who completed the Flag Ship B Tech course, trainees from the National Defence Academy, Short Service commissioned Officers, Graduate special entry scheme officers as well as 25 Officers from the Indian Coast Guard.  During training on board the ships, the officer trainees gain their sea legs and are introduced to practical aspects of seamanship, ship handling, weapon handling and gain firsthand experience on the rigours of life on board a warship at sea.  The Officers also sailed to several foreign ports, which in addition to developing their nautical skills, enables them to cultivate a multicultural and global outlook, essential for the grooming of a Naval officer.

Sub Lieutenant Ajit Singh Rana won the Chief of the Naval Staff trophy and Telescope for the best all round officer of the course. Sub Lieutenant Prashant Chandra won the Chief of Naval Staff Trophy and Binoculars for standing first in overall order of merit. Assistant Commandant Anuj Singh Chauhan received the Director General Indian Coast Guard Trophy for the best Coast Guard officer. Sub Lieutenant Rohit Reddy was awarded Flag Officer Commanding in Chief East Naval Command Trophy for maximum progress in various subjects. Sub Lieutenant Shakti Singh was adjudged the best Sportsman.
