Seven Irish universities make global top 200 in World Subject rankings

Seven of Ireland’s universities have been named among the global top 200 in at least one of the 30 disciplines covered in the QS World University Rankings by subject. The rankings series reveals the top 200 universities in the world Subject for 30 institution individual subjects.

University College Cork sees jump in World Subject rankings for environmental sciences and education.
Trinity College Dublin (TCD) remains the country’s best-performing, making the top 200 in 20 of the 30 disciplines. TCD has the strongest showing in the arts and humanities, ranking in the top 50 in English, coming in at 25th and also in history, placed at 48th.
TCD was the only Irish university to enter into the top 50, though seven of the country’s universities make the top 200 in at least one of the 30 disciplines. It also made the top 50 in politics at 46th and modern languages at 42nd.
While TCD came in top place for some subjects, University College Dublin (UCD) was ranked the top Irish institution for Chemical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering as well as Agriculture and Forestry
University College Cork (UCC) has jumped in two subject areas in particular – environmental sciences and education. Ten UCC subject areas overall make the top 200.

UCC’s environmental sciences subject is now ranked 101-150, an improvement on 2013’s ranking, which came in at 151-200. The university has also seen an improvement in the education category, now falling into the top 151-200. Other subjects remain in the top categories with UCC’s Modern Languages and Law both ranking within 51-100, While Electrical Engineering and Biological Sciences make the top 150. Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Geography land within the top 200.
Professor John O’Halloran, Head of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) said, “The latest QS Subject Rankings were a welcome vote of confidence in UCC’s student-led, research informed and practice focused approach and would help reinforce the message with employers that UCC graduates were “fit for work and fit for world”.

He added, “We are delighted to see environmental science in particular climb the QS ranks. In our programs and research we focus on the big questions, the ‘trilemmas’ facing the world – food, energy and the environment – with the competing demands for land and sea that these activities bring.

IDA Ireland appoints John Kilmartin as the Director for India business

IDA Ireland, the Irish Government’s foreign investment agency, today announced that it has appointed John Kilmartin as the Director of India business. His role involves spearheading the Indian operations of the IDA Ireland  organisation which involves promoting Ireland as an operations base for    Indian companies expanding their presence in European markets.

John Kilmartin joined IDA Ireland in July 2007. Prior to being appointed to lead the IDA India team, John held a number of roles including Business Development Manager in the Emerging Companies Division where he was responsible for assisting high growth companies to set-up operations in Ireland.

On his new appointment John Kilmartin, Director for India business, IDA Ireland said ‘Indian companies are increasingly assessing Ireland as an attractive investment destination. As part of my new role, I look forward to strengthening IDA Ireland’s outstanding position in the Indian Corporate mind-set.’ Prior to joining IDA Ireland, John was a Technology Consultant with Deloitte Consulting for 7 years where he was involved in numerous projects such as Oracle systems development, System implementations, Change Management, Strategy Definition and Project Management. John holds a Degree in Common Law and MBS (Masters in Business Studies) in Managerial Accounting and Managerial Information Systems from University College Cork.
