TATA DOCOMO Launches GSM Service in Karnataka

TATA DOCOMO, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Limited, today announced the commercial launch of its operations in Karnataka, just a few days after it announced its launch in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Orissa. The company’s Next Gen GSM service started on a heady note, with TTSL Managing Director Anil Sardana announcing a novel “Pay-for-what-you-use” model, with a pulse of one second, and a pricing of 1 paisa per second. TATA DOCOMO’s pan-India service rollout will be completed this year, with the entire South India set to go going ‘live’ next week.

In a message at the launch press conference, Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons, said: “The value proposition offered by Tata-DOCOMO is a unique and revolutionary idea which symbolizes the spirit of innovation and inventive genius. This launch is truly a moment of triumph for the consumer. The launch of pay-per-use, per-second concept offered by Tata-DOCOMO will create a paradigm shift in the overall telecom experience for the customer and provide a service that is refreshingly different.”

Introducing the One-Second Pulse—Local. STD. ISD.
TATA DOCOMO also unleashed a wide array of products and services at the launch, riding on the back of path-breaking innovative products and services, and never-before tariff options. “We had made a promise that we would bring to the country products and services that would redefine the telecom experience,” Mr Anil Sardana said. “It is a privilege to be fulfilling that promise in Karnataka—where subscribers are discerning and seek transparency, innovation and differentiation. Our partnership with NTT DOCOMO will help us provide our subscribers with tremendous technological and service differentiation. Keeping in view the century of trust associated with the House of Tata, we are launching the concept of fare being fair. From today, TATA DOCOMO subscribers will now be able to enjoy the benefits of ‘pay-as-you-use’, at only one paisa per second for all voice calls across India ,” he added.

NTT DOCOMO is acknowledged as the global leader in 3G technology and respected worldwide for its futuristic product innovations.

In a video-address, Mr Toshinari Kunieda, Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Global Business Division, NTT DOCOMO, said: “NTT DOCOMO has provided technical inputs to make the TATA DOCOMO GSM network world-class. Progressively, NTT DOCOMO shall bring to India the various products and services that we offer in Japan and many other countries—such as i-modeTM, Location-based Services (LBS) and mobile payment—and give TATA DOCOMO customers a flavor of tomorrow. TTSL and NTT DOCOMO are closely engaged in integrating technology, value-added services, products and applications through the mechanism of Business and Technology Cooperation Committee (BTCC). This should see TATA DOCOMO change the way India communicates.”

Announcing some very aggressive pricing and customization options, Mr Deepak Gulati , President, TATA DOCOMO, said: “In a market that is cluttered with many operators and throws up confusing options, we will offer simplicity to consumers by being the country’s most transparent, innovative and liberating telecom brand. The first move on this front is to cut through the clutter and redefine the entire pricing paradigm—from Day One of our launch, we will work on a per-second pricing model for almost everything, be it voice calls, VAS services, IVR interactions. Above all, we promise to always listen to our subscribers.”

“We are focusing strongly on network superiority, coverage and service offerings. Our presence in 427 towns and 2,642 villages makes our network footprint the largest among all telecom operators in Karnataka, at the time of launch. We have already made large investments in the Circle, and further expansion this year itself is on the anvil,” Mr Yatish Mehrotra , TATA DOCOMO’s Hub-head for South India , said. “TATA DOCOMO will unveil a portfolio of Value-Added Services that will reinvent mobile telephony in India , with products and services like Free Voicemail, Timed SMS Service, Free Missed Call Alerts, Call-me Tunes, etc—all of them customized to liberate and refresh our subscribers,” he added.

The company has earmarked an investment of $2 billion on its pan-India GSM network rollout.

Superior Technology and Network
From the day of the launch, the reach and coverage of the TATA DOCOMO network is greater in Karnataka than that of any other operator at the launch stage. The TATA DOCOMO GSM mobile service will have extensive coverage in 427 towns and cities and 2,642 villages in Karnataka, along 505 km of the state’s highways, at airports, along 220 km of rail routes and at places of tourist interest.

NTT DOCOMO has played a major role in the evolution of mobile telecommunications through its development of cutting-edge technologies and services. Over the years, technologists at NTT DOCOMO have defined industry benchmarks for 3G technology, as also products and services such as i-mode and a plethora of lifestyle-enhancing applications. Today, while most global telecom players are only beginning to talk of 4G technology and its possible applications, NTT DOCOMO has already recorded a downlink transmission rate of 250 Mbps over a high-speed wireless network in an outdoor test of an experimental system for Super 3G, also known as LTE, and is targeting to complete the commercial development by the end of 2009. This will hold Tata DOCOMO in good stead as it launches GSM services.

TCS Launches New Business Intelligence Solution for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: TCS.BO, NSE: TCS.NS), a leading IT services, business solutions and outsourcing firm, has launched Provider Performance Insight, a business intelligence (BI) solution built on SAP® BusinessObjects™ software for hospitals and other healthcare providers. Using its proprietary BI framework, TCS has developed an out-of-the-box dashboard that will simplify projects, reduce costs and dramatically shorten time to value related to both hospital administration and patient care.
Hospitals have traditionally not embarked on end-to-end data warehousing and analysis due to perceived high costs, high complexity and long gestation period. Typical business intelligence projects in other industries can take 12 months for initial results and up to 18 months for completion. In response, TCS’ Provider Performance Insight takes just three to five months to deploy and provides end-to-end solutions for both administrative and clinical processes to enhance patient services and improve strategic decision making.
“The escalating cost of healthcare makes it imperative for all healthcare providers to evaluate efficiencies in every aspect of their business,” said Debashis Ghosh, head of Life Sciences and Healthcare at TCS. “Both patient care and operational effectiveness need to be evaluated, improved and tracked on an ongoing basis and this will be enabled by our solution.”
The dashboard has been developed using TCS’ hBIDS (healthcare analytics framework) and built on the SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius™ software. The hBIDS framework has a comprehensive list of performance indicators covering most of the operational and clinical areas of a hospital, including customer care and satisfaction, resource utilization, staff satisfaction, staff utilization, clinical outcomes, and financial measurements.
The Provider Performance Insight solution provides the following:- A snapshot of patient care delivery activities- Effective performance evaluations of patient service - Ability to optimize staffing levels to reduce overall cost- Power to track and trend staffing ratios over multiple periods - Real-time assessment of overall financial status- Ability to compare revenue across peer organizations or departments- Increase revenue across clinical service lines
“SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius is an intuitive and robust tool set with rich analytic capabilities, making it an ideal solution for healthcare providers to enhance visibility into their patient care and business operations,” said John Papandrea, senior vice president and Global Healthcare Sector Head, SAP. “SAP’s vision for healthcare is to provide applications that support the ability of healthcare provider organizations to focus on improving quality, helping maintain or reduce costs, and increasing transparency of the quality of care that is provided to consumers. We applaud TCS on the delivery of this new solution to healthcare providers, which will help to improve these fundamental metrics of performance.”

Tata Elxsi's Visual Computing Labs nominated for India's first-ever VES Award

Tata Elxsi Ltd, today announced it has been nominated by Hollywood-based Visual Effects Society (VES) for delivering outstanding animation in “Roadside Romeo”, India ’s pioneering CGI animated theatrical contemporary entertainment movie. It has been nominated in the category of “Outstanding Animation in an Animated Motion Picture” and will compete with “Bolt” (Walt Disney Pictures), “Kung Fu Panda” (DreamWorks Animation), “Wall-E” (Disney-Pixar), and “Waltz With Bashir” (Sony Pictures Classics).

The Visual Effects Society, with more than 1,800 members in 17 countries, is the entertainment industry's only organization representing the full breadth of visual effects practitioners including artists, technologists, studio leaders, supervisors and producers in all areas of entertainment from film, television and commercials to music videos and games. The 7th Annual VES Awards will be presented on Saturday, February 21 in Los Angeles .

A co-production of Walt Disney Pictures and India ’s Yash Raj Films, “Roadside Romeo”, created by Tata Elxsi Ltd’s Visual Computing Labs (VCL) studios in Mumbai, was released globally in the Hindi language, with English subtitles, in October, 2008. Earlier this month, “Roadside Romeo” was named “Best Animated Film” at the 15th Annual Star Screen Awards in Mumbai.

“Roadside Romeo” is considered to be India ’s first purely-entertainment animated theatrical motion picture, including eight original songs and five fully-choreographed ‘Bollywood’ musical numbers. This film departs significantly from the previous crop of animation films in India , in that it is a fully 3D animation movie, and follows a classic Bollywood formula as compared to the scores of 2D animated films based on mythology. Tata Elxsi - VCL’s lead creative team on “Roadside Romeo,” individually named by the VES, includes Pankaj Khandpur - Creative Director and Head of Production, Sherry Bharda - Creative Supervisor; Shrirang Sathaye - Animation Director, and Suhael Merchant - Animation Director.

“This is indeed a proud moment for us and a great achievement for the Indian animation industry. Roadside Romeo is an innovation because it exhibits and brings together the intricate technological detailing that goes into making a detailed 3D film. Indian animation has truly come a long way and we are happy that through this movie we have been able to raise the bar on the quality of animation in India ”, said Mr. Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Director, VCL, Tata Elxsi Ltd.

Detailing the production process, Mr. Khandpur said, “Our VCL team got involved in the creative process right from the beginning. When Jugal Hansraj, the director of the movie shared with us the script, we began conceptualizing each individual character and their environments and we began to draw them, the old fashioned way, using pencil and paper. This process lasted three months. Once this stage was completed, we began storyboarding the film, illustrating each and every scene throughout the film. This was followed by the animatics’ process --- our first look at how all characters will move and interact with each other. The animation pre-production process took about 4 months, eventually overlapping the start of actual production.”

“For the full-blown production,” Mr. Khandpur further explained, “VCL had an entirely in-house crew averaging 120 artists who worked on Roadside Romeo for over 15 months. The VCL team included modelers, riggers, animators, lighters and compositors, supported by texture artists, render wranglers and a core team of technical programmers. At the peak, we had a 170 member team working on this project. We have earned this nomination though the quality of our work, and yet the production costs of Roadside Romeo was a fraction of the production costs for major Hollywood CGI animated films. ”

In addition to animating Roadside Romeo, Tata Elxsi Ltd’s VCL division --- now considered India’s preeminent motion picture visual effects studio has created special effects for many significant films in like “Rab ne Bana di Jodi, “Jodhaa Akbar, ” “Taare Zameen Par” (India’s official Entry to the Oscars), “Rang De Basanti, ” “Dhoom 2” and many more.VCL has also worked with other leading US entertainment companies including Sony Pictures Imageworks, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), Lionsgate, Mike Young Productions, MGM, STARZ/Film Roman, and others.

Bangalore is the fourth largest eCommerce Hub in the eBay Census

eBay India (www.eBay.in), India’s leading online marketplace, announced that Bangalore is the fourth largest eCommerce Hub* in the country, according to the eBay India Census. Sharat Digumarti, Head – Category Management, eBay India today unveiled the eBay Census Guide which documents the key findings and trends in buying and selling across Indians in the Top 100 eCommerce Cities and 28 States & 6 Union Territories .

India’s Top 5 eCommerce Hubs are the metro cities of Mumbai, closely followed by Delhi, Hyderabad , Bangalore & Chennai. According to the eBay India Census, Mr. Sharat Digumarti revealed:

· eCommerce has become mainstream: Over 2421 cities had online transactions in 2007. The IT Hubs of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were the most wired states of India with the maximum number of towns where eCommerce originates.

· eCommerce helps bridge distribution inefficiencies: Online marketplaces like eBay help create trade between metros and class B & C cities by bridging the demand and supply gap. Over a third of all products bought by eBayers in the Hilly areas (North East, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh) are tech gadgets (Mobile Phones, Digital Cameras and USB Drives). While women from Metros are buying a lot of sarees, the sellers are spread across various cities & towns of India including manufacturing hubs & handicraft hubs like Devanagere (Karnataka), Chittaurgarh (Rajasthan); Lucknow, Kunnamkulam (Kerala)

· Bharat displays very different shopping behavior from India : Metro eBayers & Non-Metro eBayers have distinct product preferences. Bharat is looking for a good deal in their online shopping habits and buy more value handsets and discounted branded apparel online. Non-Metro women are buying short kurtis, skirts while Women in Metros are buying hand woven sarees and shawls.

· Traditional Handicrafts find an unlikely partner in eCommerce:
The handicraft industry in India has always been the forte of craftsmen belonging to smaller villages and towns.
