Born to parents who were landless agricultural labourers in the state of Manipur in Northeast India, Mary’s story is one of relentless struggle and an unflinching passion for the sport of boxing. A childhood of hard labour prepared her body for the sport just as well as any fitness training might have. Her own will and determination carried her through the minefield of politics that any sport in India is. Nimble of foot and pulling no punches, the boxing ring was Mary’s dominion.
Speaking on the launch of her book, Mary said, “My struggle has been one that many in our country face, especially women. The reason I decided to pen my story down was so others could read it and feel that if I could achieve what I have, so can they. One must have passion, dedication and faith in oneself and all dreams can come true.”
Singer Kavita Krishnamurthy and Mr L.Subramanian who graced the occasion as a special guest were all praise for the sporting stalwart. “Mary Kom is already a celebrated figure in the country loved and admired by all. She has made North East more seen through her immeasurable efforts in breaking the myth that women can do anything and everything, from the kitchen to the boxing ring. The book delightfully talks about her hardships and journey through it ,with the spirit of not giving up.”
