Initial reports say that the Coast Guard and Indian Navy have diverted ships to provide assistance in evacuation.
The oil rig is situated 162 kilometres off the coast of Mumbai and is operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
ONGC shuts well drilling operations; evacuate all non-essential staff.
