Violent protests broke out at Gorur in Magadi taluk of Ramanagara district against the setting up of waste disposal unit. Villagers of Gorur protested in large numbers opposing a proposed waste management plant coming up at 45 acres of land in their village.
Two officials and several residents, including women and senior citizens, were injured in stone throwing and the subsequent lathicharge by police. One of the injured is said to be critical. Some protesters even attempted suicide in protest against the survey.
The villagers gheraoed the Ramanagara DC, they assaulted a surveyor and also pelted stones on the govt vehicles that arrived at the spot. But the officials have managed to survey 32 acres of land and left to Ramanagara amidst all the chaos. Efforts to make the people understand that Gorur will not be turned into another Mandur have gone in vain. The cops had to resort to lathicharge to drive away the protesters and also arrested Bande Mutt's Basavalinga Swamiji.
The villagers shouted slogans against DK shivakumar and CM Siddaramaiah. DK Shivakumar is the Ramanagara dist-incharge. The villagers also staged a rasta roko protest and burnt tires on the roads. Gorur was on the boil since morning as news spread about an official team visiting the village for a landfill survey.
