#AnilKumble launches free book distributing campaign for ChildFund India

ChildFund India, one of the country’s oldest child-focused non profits has unveiled an innovative nationwide campaign titled “Books, my Friends/ Kitabein meri dost” to encourage children to go beyond their text books and discover the joy of reading. The campaign was launched by Anil Kumble, former captain of the Indian cricket team, who presented books to children from marginalized communities in Karnataka.

Briefing the media, CFI Asia regional director, Neelam Makhikani, said: “We sponsor 1.8 million children across 14 Indian states. Of this, based on geographical location, local communities and livelihood conditions, we chose 38,000 children, of which 9,000 are from Karnataka. They will be given books to read and share with others. These are the first children in their families to be educated and have least resources.”
Nearly 40 percent of children across all age groups in India drop out of school each year.
