Pro Farmers budget ; Ms. Sangita Reddy (Apollo Hospitals Group)

Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group Ms. Sangita Reddy feels Union Budget recognises “agriculture and farmers welfare” as a pillar of the transformative agenda of this Government. The sizeable allocations made for the 'Krishi Sinchai Yojna' and the 'Fasal Bima Yojana' will take them to the much needed scale.


The commitment to cover all the farmers under the Soil health Card Scheme by March 2017 is laudable. This will go a long way In minimising the distortion caused by the fertiliser subsidies and improve the soil health.

The target of 5 lakh acres for organic farming is more realistic compared to the general rhetoric one had seen in the past,  and is more likely to see useful action on this front.


The reiteration that States need to amend  their APMC acts to join the e-platform for agri marketing gives an assurance that the implementation of the 2003 Model APMC Act may, after all, be a reality soon.


Tweaking MNREGA to the current rural and agricultural realities and allocating nearly Rs 40,000 Crores is a good step. This will serve both the farmers and the labour, besides creating infrastructure assets.

Recognising that rural is broader than agriculture and giving sufficient attention to allied activities like animal husbandry, and the thrust towards non-farm rural activities like skill building, rurban clusters etc will speed up the growth momentum in rural India, in general
