The Centre has been directed to give an explanation on December 15th before the apex court on the appointment of Rakesh Asthana the interim Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).NGO Society - Common Cause filed a petition before the apex court seeeking quashing of the appointment of Asthana as interim Director, of the CBI and a direction to the Central government to initiate the process for the appointment of regular director for CBI.Asthana had headed the SIT that had probed Godhra train burning case and held several important positions in Gujarat police.Asthana, an IPS officer of 1984-batch, was elevated as the Additional Director in the agency on December 2 when CBI Special Director R K Dutta, who was reportedly among the frontrunners for the top post, was shifted to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as a Special Secretary.
