The company piloted the “Open Mentoring Program” to foster learning relationships that connect and reinforce Baxter’s leadership expectations through sharing experiences and knowledge. The company manages a leadership development program for its managers and top talent.
• Each October, employees across the nation volunteer time and contribute funds to "Making a Meaningful Difference" month activities that improve the lives of people in local communities and care for the environment. In 2011, more than 700 employees and their families across 17 locations contributed 2500 volunteer hours in their communities.
• Through the Baxter International Foundation, Baxter strives to increase access to healthcare especially for the disadvantaged and underserved. For example in India, the Foundation works with Plan International India in New Delhi, to empower the community and enhance the capability of more than 1,500 mothers to effectively manage and respond to children's health needs through home-based care and also to address the primary healthcare needs of approximately 5,000 children through the establishment of a primary health center and outreach health services.
• Baxter’s plants in India strive to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by leveraging innovative renewable energy strategies such as using biomass fuels rather than fuel oil. For example, Baxter's Alathur and Waluj, India, facilities use coconut and rice husks and sugar cane remnants as energy sources in boilers to decrease fossil-fuel related greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy costs and contribute to the local economy.
A distinguished independent jury comprising of business leaders from Indian and US based companies and the consular corps from the US Consulate evaluated the various participating companies.
