Roomstory.com & CURE tie up this Diwali to Light up Underprivileged Family Homes

This Diwali, RoomStory.com has partnered with the NGO Center for Urban and Rural Excellence (CURE) to bring you
a handcrafted collection of Diyas and Candles. Each of these diyas and candles is made by women from the slum resettlement area of SavdaGhevra (in Delhi) as part of the Ajeevika Program started by CURE with the support of Jamshedji Tata Trust.

Through this program CURE empowers underprivileged women to earn sustainable livelihoods thereby strengthening their place in the household and improving the living conditions of their families. By providing these women with skills training, some raw material, and connections to marketplaces to sell their product they are helping them start their own small businesses and fostering model of market based philanthropy.

RoomStory.com is the first online marketplace that CURE has tied up with to give the program more exposure and catch the e-commerce wave in India. Over the next couple of weeks RoomStory plans to bring online a few collections of table linen, and cushion covers also made by women from SavdaGhevra.

According to Mr. Nipun Virmani, Co-founder Roomstory.com, “We’re still a young startup but like supporting a good cause whenever we can. This model of market based philanthropy embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, which we are passionate about, and we believe is a great idea to reduce poverty in India.

Speaking on the tie-up, Dr. Renu Khosla, Director, Social Development, CURE India said, “to move poor people out of poverty CURE needed to ‘unthink’ its livelihood strategy and e-tailing with RoomStory seems the perfect answer for sustained access to a far-far bigger market”
So please stay tuned, and support a noble cause this Diwali while you shop!
