As Cyclone Phailin approaches Odisha coast, comparisons are being drawn between it and some of the other tropical storms especially with Paradip cyclone that devastated Odisha 14 years ago. Here are some comparisons and similarities between these storms.
Origination: the places of origin of both of these tropical storms are same in the Malay Peninsula. Both of them developed in depression and then into deep depression in the same area.
Direction: Both of these systems moved in west northwest direction from their place of origination. The Paradip cyclone developed into a depression on 25th of October and took four days to reach Odisha coast. While the yet to hit cyclone Phailin has developed into a depression on 8th of October and will hit Odisha coast on 12th of October taking the same time as the Paradip cyclone.
Landfall: Cyclone Paradip made the landfall on 29th October near Bhubaneswar while Cyclone Phailin is expected to make a landfall near Gopalpur adjacent to Paradip.
Winds speed: Paradip cyclone of category 05B is still considered as one of the deadliest cyclone to hit east coast of India after the one in 1971. The cyclone had a wind speed of close to 300 kmph. Phailin is expected to become a Category 5 cyclone. It will have a wind speed of 220-250 kmph while making a landfall on 12th of October.
High Tide: Paradip Cyclone had made a landfall with high tides as long as 8-10 meters. Phailin is expected to bring high tides of up to 10-12 meters.
Destruction: In terms of devastation Cyclone Paradip remains severest of cyclone emerged in India Ocean. It completely ravaged Odisha coast line, killing more than 15000 people and left millions homeless. Jagatsinghput district was most affected. Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara,Puri and Ganjam were other districts that were severely affected by Cyclone Paradip.
This time Brahmapur, Gopalpur, Chatrapur, Balugaon, Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore are the places likely to be affected by Phailin.
To counter Phailin, efforts are on to evacuate coastal residents from low lying areas in odisha.
