United Way of Bengaluru corporate volunteers take up ‘Wake the Lake’ & ‘Born Learning’ campaigns
United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe), a network partner of the 126 years old US based charity-United Way Worldwide conducted a volunteering day with over 1000 volunteers from multiple corporates. Tree Plantation Drives were organized at both Sheelavanthakere & Agara lake. Volunteers also planted nutritious saplings at the houses of the quarry worker’s community & painted the Born Learning Centres and Government school classrooms located in the Kogilu Bande, Agrahara, Belahally & Hegdenagar area.
The volunteering events were conducted by UWBe with an objective to raise awareness about the horrid state of the lakes in the city and the colossal issue of malnourishment. United Way of Bengaluru’s ‘Wake the Lake’ campaign initiated in 2011 in association with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) aims at restoring these dying lakes of the city. Its ‘Born Learning’ campaign launched in 2012 intends to reach out to underprivileged children below the age of 6 and provide them with early learning opportunities & right nutrition in order to address the shameful issue of malnutrition in a developing country such as ours.

Over 600 volunteers from corporate giants Deloitte & GE planted 1200 saplings around these lakes situated in the city’s popular Whitefield & Sarjapura area. 400 Deloitte volunteers participated in the painting of the signature design at United Way of Bengaluru’s Born Learning Centres to give the children a colorful &vibrant space. They also painted the local Government school in the area to impact the community as a whole.
On the occasion Alok Nanda, Chairman, GE Volunteers, Bangalore said “GE Volunteers in Bangalore are dedicated to making a positive difference in our community. We actively work towards solving pressing issues in the areas of environment, education, health and community building. Today’s initiative was a step towards preserving the city’s water bodies and restoring their eco-system. We are happy to be part of the ‘Wake the Lake’ campaign.”

Sabu Thomas, Chairman, UWBe said, At United Way, we believe in mobilizing the caring power of communities. This means channelizing the collaborative efforts of all the stakeholders involved in the process. Corporates play a significant role in this change process. We are happy that over 1000 volunteers from corporate giants such as Deloitte & GE will be participating in our ‘Wake the Lake’ & ‘Born Learning’ events today. We hope for their continued support as advocates of our campaigns.”
