Seminar on the Role of Media and Democracy in Elections in Bangalore

Indian Union of Journalists (IJU) New Delhi and Karnataka State Journalist Federation (KSJF) jointly organized a seminar on the role of Media and Democracy in Elections.

Healthy democracy must ensure equitable, social, political and economic justice to the common man. To realize these objectives media must play a major role in connecting the people with the government. So said, Mr. Kagodu Thimappa, Speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly while inaugurating the seminar held at Hotel Woodlands Bangalore. He was confident that media though facing difficulties can bring about a sea change in our democratic set up.
Mr. K. Amarnath Member Press Council felt that paid news is hampering democracy and distorting the electoral process. Mr. S.R Hiremath convener Samaj Parivarthan said “Total freedom of press is the need of the hour and the time has come to insulate the fourth pillar of democracy against all dangers”.
Mr. K.Srinivas Reddy, former Secretary General, IJU stressed that the fight is between the honest and the dishonest in the present day society. He advised media to take lead in exposing corrupt practices to put our democracy back on track. Mr. Prithvi Reddy of AAP Karnataka said that “The country is old but democracy is young and vibrant. Media should serve as eyes, ears and mouth of society”.
Mr.S.N. Sinha, President IJU who was the moderator of the panel discussion stressed the need for making the press and journalists free, so that they can report with objectivity, frankness and fearlessness.

Mr. D. Amar, Secretary General, IJU, Mr. Bharkar Shetty President and Mr. P. Bhaskar Reddy General Secretary. KSJF along with large number of office bearers of IJU from various states and local journalists attended the seminar. Mr. Virupanna VP KSJF proposed the vote of thanks.
