Huge fund allocations were made for Kolkata Metro when Mamata Banerjee, Dinesh Trivedi and Mukul Roy were railway ministers in UPA government. In the railway budgets of 2009-10 and 2010-11, Kolkata Metro got nearly Rs 9,278 crore. But by the end of 2011-12, only about Rs 859.92 crore of this could be spent mainly because of political uncertainty in West Bengal. In this budget only Rs 500 crore have allocated for the 4 ongoing metro rail projects. In the last rail budget also a paltry sum of Rs 475 crore were allocated for Metro expansion in Kolkata. Acute fund crunch is all set to put a break on the expansion of Kolkata Metro rail.
Kolkata Metro is the only metro under Indian Railways. For projects worth Rs 10000 crore, only Rs 500 crore allocated: Derek O'Brien
