US President Barak Obama has nominated Richard Rahul Verma as the next U.S. Ambassador to India
If confirmed by Congress, Mr Verma will replace Nancy Powell who resigned in March after a row over the arrest of an Indian diplomat in New York.The announcement comes ahead of a visit to Washington by Indian PM Narendra Modi, planned for the end of September.
Richard Rahul Verma (born 1969) was the Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, at the U.S. Department of State until March 2011. He was nominated by President Obama in 2009. He is a lawyer with extensive experience in national security and nonproliferation issues.
Verma is married to Pinky Verma, an attorney and they reside in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC with their six-year-old twins, Lucy and Dylan, and nine year old daughter, Zoe and with their fox terrier, Arlo
