Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has found MonoSodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead in excess of the permissible limit in a Maggi packet bought from EasyDay store in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. After finding samples of Maggi with excess MSG and lead in Barabanki, FSDA has stated Surveillance Sampling across the country.Maggi samples were tested at FSDA's Kolkata referral laboratory and results show that there are excess MSG and lead in the Maggi samples.Test results showed Maggi containing 17 parts per million(ppm) lead, whereas the permissible limit is 0.01ppm.
FSDA rule says that if any product contains MSG , it must mention it on the wrapper and it should also inform that it shouldn’t be consumed by those below the age of 12. Amino acid category MSG can be severely harmful for the health of children as it causes stomach pain, vomiting, laziness and weakness in children.
