#Chennaifloods : A man-made disaster

Unplanned and illegal constructions, forceful encroachment of wetland are the main reason for current flooding in Chennai.
Chennai’s  main waterways (the Adyar river) have been blocked over the years leading to unplanned roadways and shrinking the space for natural drains.Encroachment over marshlands, reclamation of water bodies to plant concrete jungles on, and lack of smart urban planning have come together to form a recipe for an unprecedented catastrophe, that Chennai is witnessing today. The blame for the flooding must go to film actors-turned-state administrators who have been ruling the state since late ‘70s and continues to do so even as they have miserably failed to create proper infrastructure for the city. The city’s largest mall, Phoenix, sits on what used to be a lake-bed in Velachery.
