Indian Medical Association (IMA) wants cap on compensation given to victims of medical negligence

Dr KK Aggarwal, secretary general of the IMA wants to set a cap on the insurance cover taken by the doctors.
The case of medical negligence came into pronance after Supreme Court awarded a whopping Rs 5.96 crore as compensation to US-based Indian-origin doctor Dr Kunal Saha.The amount was paid by Kolkata-based AMRI Hospital and three doctors to Saha for medical negligence which led to the death of his wife Anuradha in 1998.
Incidentally, AMRI Hospital at Dhakuria Kolkata, where Anuradha was treated, has been closed since a fire gutted one of its buildings killing 93 people, most of whom were patients, on December nine, 2011.
Recently, IMA has cancelled its scheduled meeting in Pattaya after criticism from Punjab Medical Council.The meeting was to be held on November 27 and 28 in Pattaya. Pattaya, often referred to as the "unofficial sex tourism capital of the world.IMA members raised questions about spending of several lakhs for such lavish meeting.
